Can I register an '02 F250 4x4 CC 6 foot bed with passenger plates in NY? I bought the truck out of state, and left them my passenger plates. The plates came back along with the new commercial plates, the company that handles out of state registration said that NYS requires commercial plates. I need passenger plates, I have parkways all around me, and I see 4x4 CC duallys with passenger plates, with no cap or bed cover, so should I assume it was a mistake? The truck will be used for pleasure only, not a work truck.

They listed the truck as 8800 lbs GVW.

If the actual weight ("shipping weight") of the truck is less than 5500 lbs., then you can put NY passenger plates on it. Otherwise, you'll have to put a cap on the box and a seat in the box to make it a passenger vehicle. I don't see how a dualie with no cap can have passenger plates on it in this state.

I went to the website, I agree with you, that's what it says. But, I drove around and looked at trucks all week with no commercial plates, so they must know something I don't know. My best friend swears he had passenger plates on his F350 CC, and I just saw a Dodge CC heavyduty dually with passenger plates. I'm going to the DMV on Friday to see what I need to do.

It can be done. You need to provide a receipt for a cap with two seats and seat belt. It will be a lot harder to do now that the truck has been tagged commercial,but not impossible. Notice, I said provide a receipt and not necessarily have the items.. Hint Hint

I do have a crew cab, do I only need to cover the bed? Tonneau cover?

Thats up to you. I don't. If your worried about tickets only a cap will due and thats no guarantee. If you ask a trooper they will tell you you need to have camping equipment fixed in the bed of the truck. The DMV says a cap, seats and seat belts will due. Nobody is on the same page with this issue. That works in your favor :) Get the plates and don't worry about it. I have had Troopers behind me on the side of me and never had a problem. F250 CC PSD to boot!!

I have passenger plates on my F-250, no problem on the parkways. Technically it's a no no, grossly overweight. I don't have a cap (hard tonneu cover), and have attracted some attention, but try it with a dually, thats a red flag.

I'm in NY and registered my 05 f350 cc 8' bed srw 6.0 deisel as passenger. Just have to tell DMV that you installed a cap, seats and seatbelts in the bed. Use form MV-82 from http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms.htm I suggest you leave the weight blank. They don't require a reciept. You just have to state on the form that it was done. Once you receive the plates there is no requirement to keep the cap on or seats in. So did they ever exist?....hmmm. As long as you don't add any writing on the side of the vehicle cops won't bother you. As for the dually I don't know, but no one ever asked me if mine was or not. Good Luck!

Well, after 2.5 hours waiting at the Herald Square DMV, I got my passenger plates. I lucked out, the clerk was an old man who kind of knew what I was trying to do, so he said, "Let's play guess the weight of the truck until the computer accepts it as a passenger car." He put down 5200 lbs for the unladen weight, 5400 GVW. $16 to switch the plates over, so I'm a pretty happy camper now.

You guys are playing with fire if they decide to start weighing you or enforce the laws.

A friend has a Dodge dually with passenger plates (legal), he has been stopped on the Southern State Parkway. Alot of vehicles, SuperDuties included, far exceed the weight limit restriction (6000 lbs) on the parkways, but duallies are like waving a red flag.

My lady wasn't as dumb, her husband had a F250, so I thought I would get a break. Nope, commercial plate for me.

If they pull you on the scales and you are 2000 pounds over weight with an empty truck, you are going to have a hard time getting it legal before you can move it.

I just got my US DOT number for mine because it is registered for over 10,000 pounds.

just move to new jersey.pay the pasenger at commerial fee by the weight class. i've got milatary member plates on mine but it still costs 128 per year
