1991 f150 towing capacity

does anyone out there know the tow rating for a 1991 f150 4x4,4.9 liter with 355 axles?

auto/stick? do you happen to have the owners manual?

gfalin1959 02-19-2005 07:49 PM

sorry dont have an owners manual and it is an auto

About 11,000 lbs GCWR (gross combined weight rating), minus the weight of the truck (4,500-5,000 lbs), so probably around 6,000 lbs max trailer weight.

thanks guys i couldnt find this info anywhere

ford390gashog 02-20-2005 09:07 PM

about 6,000 max with trailer

jroehl 02-21-2005 08:54 AM

From the '90 owner's manual, the GCWR for a 4.9/AT/3.55 combo is 10,000 lbs. I can't imagine it went up much from that for '91. Max frontal area for the trailer is 60s.f., too.

jroehl, turns out I was over by 1,000 lbs on the GCWR estimate. I thought the inline-6 was rated the same as the 351. Sorry guys.

Going by jroehl's info, the max trailer tow capacity would be about 5,000 lbs. My apologies for the error.

Ok I have a question.. How much would having a 302 engine change the towing capacity?
Anyone care to venture a guess??

I have a 26 foot Argosy (airstream) travel trailer coming in at 2600 lbs empty..

I made an 800 mile trip already bringing the trailer home and didnt encounter any major
issues other than the lack of trailer braking on wet roads.. I really tried to avoid pushing it at all..

My 91 F-150 is equipped with a class 3 hitch, and if it looks like the F-150 will not be overloaded than things like a trans cooler will be installed. The F150 has an AOD automatic trans. I did use it without going into od. With one exception on the way home for maybe 50 miles. I couldnt see any issues, but again did not push the trans. And any incline went back to Non overdrive.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

I've found that TrailerLife's towing guide is a great resource. :)
