How quick is a lightning???

G'day guys,

I am planning on building up my "pickup" as a marketing exercise for my company.
It will be mostly a drag vehicle.

I am curious though, as the lightning isn't sold anymore, I believe my "pickup" is the fastest current Ford pickup.
I would like to know how quick stock lightnings are?
I assume 2003 model ones would be the quickest of the lot?
I don't know a lot about lightnings, I imagine they ran supercharged 2V 5.4's in thier later years though, is this correct?
My vehicle is a naturally aspirated 4V 5.4 (Cobra R motor...) and I am hoping to supercharge it.

Also what is a expectation as a quick lightning (can their be a slow one?), 12s 1/4's?

If you want to have a look at it:

Cool truck, tell us more; unibody or frame? Tow rating? payload?

The stock Lightnings will run high 13's stock also.....BUT, as you know, with a supercharger 12's........11's.......and if I dare say 10's are just pulleys, gears and fuel systems away. I would be suspect of the stock internals trying to go faster than 12's IMHO.

Yes, they do use the 5.4 2V.

Before the SRT-10 the Lightning was the fastest truck in the world (stock) @ 147 MPH. the new record is 154MPH, the Dodge is also $15,000 more expensive!!!

The Lightning will tow 5000 pounds and has a payload of 1000 pounds.

Your Cobra R motor with lower compression and supercharged I would imagine should be comparable to the current Ford GT motor at 550HP and 500#feet of torque.

Since I responded first to your ??? I get the first ride in your truck!!! :-X06

It is a a unibody with an integrated frame (it is based on a car, but it is still one tough unit)

Towing capacity: 5000lbs
Payload: 1100lbs (the more utilitarian models take up to 2500lbs)
Trans: T56 manual or 4 speed Auto

I have plans of a lot more than 550HP and 500lbft however...
The main differences is my 4V is 100% cast iron, and not alloy.
My car currently has around 620HP at the rear wheels with a supercharged 4V 5.4, but it still has stock tires, and will smoke the rears at over 100mph...:-D so not the quickest down the strip, I have really high trap speeds, but not that great ETs given the power, and given I am not a pro drag racer, I will run a set of slicks on this for drag racing, but it will still be driven on the street.

As for top speed, I have had mine up to an indicated 245kmh (152mph) - no speed limits where I live!!! - with a little power to spare.

Do Dodge advertise the SRT-10 as the fastest production pickup in the world?
I would question this, as my pickup is probably a bit faster (not much though), but Holden (GM in Australia) make a pickup with a LS2 in it, and I know that does over 160mph...
Someone might be fibbing somewhere ;)

Dodge did a big deal with local(Vegas) racer Brendan Gaughn(sp?) he races the Craftsman Truck Series as well as Nextel Cup. Family also owns a few casinos(useless tivia, I know)

I can't remember the magazine but it was a full centerfold with the posted speed lit up on a scoreboard proclaiming "Worlds Fastest Truck."

I'm impressed/jealous at the iron you guys have.

Ahh...

Those guys did an official Guiness books record test.
That has never been done with either of the pickups we have here, but I would imagine that both of them are capable of beating the Dodge convincingly(the Holden does a 13.3s 1/4...)

I spose something to drop into the conversation when your SRT-10 toting mate says his Dodge is better than your Lightning because its the fastest truck in the world - well its not.

the SRT-10 definately is not worth a Ford truck...
1.its $15,000 more than a Lightning, sometimes more
2.you can't hook it up much more than it is without messing up the computer
3.you can't put slicks on it because of the speed sensor without messing up the computer (one of the reasons those trucks run only two tenths faster in the quarter mile than a STOCK generation 2 Lightning)
4.No one can touch a Ford engine's tire twisting, head snapping torque
5.Ford trucks can be easily toyed with to make more power and faster times than any other truck on the planet
