Started a rear bumper.
spent some time fabbing up a new rear bumper which is hopefully more stout than that POS stock stamped one ford called a bumper. I need to get the necessary flat black that it is supposed to be but it is going to rain before I get to buy paint so some white will do for now. I am also working on making a swing gate which I have not gotten to do yet because of running out of time.

looking good man... a i noticed in one of your vids you had to re-arrange your rear bumper to clear some rocks! lol

no no, I was clearancing my bumper so I don't get caught up as much. :)
|
Needs about 90#s more steel and some spikes }>
|
I like the clearance.
What do you have to protect the rear gas tank, just the factory shield? Kind of off topic, but, is that a custom built roll cage or one you ordered and do your bead locks leak down a lot? |
45 gallon fuel cell. Had to make my own skid protection.
http://www.1ton4x4.com/misc/skid2.jpg The cage was in there when I bought it. I have cut parts of it out to modify the bed into something usable. The bead locks do not leak at all. Well I did have some problems when I was down @ 6psi in the snow when I went but I need to check some things out to see what was happening. |
So my Dad and I are going halfs on a welder. I used to weld
back in high school but it's been like 6 years and I will have to learn all over again. But my Dad has some experience. Anyway where would I get metal to work with like what I always see you guys using? It may be awhile before we get something to weld with so where would I get a solid front bumper to mount a winch too? Keep in mind $$$ IS an issue. I looked around google for ahile but most of them are 500 or homemade. BTW that rear bumper is nice and that tank guard is looks tough as nails. |
find a friend who has a welder and can make stuff that is built to last. I have seen the warn bumpers and honestly I would not winch on them with a 6k lb winch let alone a 12k winch. they look flimsy. The bronco which I seen one on looked like the bumper was going to pop off. It literally moved like 2 inches. IT was bolted on in all the places it was supposed to have been.
|
where do you guys buy the metal though?
|
There are places that sell metals. Look under Metals in your yellow pages. find some one close and walk thru to see what they have to offer to you.
|
i get all my metal from skool. i just say that i am working on a project and they let me get it. any welding shop will carry it and if not they know where to get it from! also most companys will ship your order for free if you buy over a certain amount. i know Atlanta Steel Inc will ship to my door for free if I buy more than $100 worth!

Find a place that also sells scrap, instead of just new. Many times you can get the steel you need thats just as good as new and save big bucks by paying scrap prices. Should be some places in your yellow pages. If for some reason you can't find one ask the guys at the welding supply shop, they'll know.

Looks nice.
Are those the Xl's that you posted those pics on? The ones above look like they are in good condition. Where did you get your shackles? did you fab them? |
thing is they were not in all that bad condition. they were just rotted thru.
They are lowering shackles for a 97 F-150 I beleive. |
So they all looked good and new like above but were rotted through (not visably) and didnt last 1500 miles?
