7.3 oil cooler O - ring replacement

Hey I was wondering if anyone had changed the o rings on the oil cooler cylinder on a 95 powerstroke. Mine is leaking and is getting worse, was wondering if it can come apart from the rear by pulling the oil filter adapter. I know i gotta drain the coolant, but all data says that I haver to pull the fan/shroud to get at it. Anyone tried this one? Thanks for any help Josh

Ok, so if my front mounting adapter is not leaking then I should be able to pullit from the back? anyone got any other tricks for keeping it together to bolt it up?

Navistar444 01-26-2005 10:13 PM

I am hoping i can pull off the back mount, pull the cylinder, then reasemble without removing the front mount. possible?

Would oil cooler o-ring failure give one black sludgy coolant??? I 'n not suer wher my oil cooler is and how to tell if it;s shot any help would be much appricateed!!! I need to know how I'm getting so much iol in my coolant. Thnaks to any one J

The oil cooler is located behind and under the vacuum pump and powersteering pump right to the block. If you look under your truck find your oil filter and right above it and forward of it. Round cylinder looking thing. I don't know if its common for them to leak internaly but its a possibilty.

I find it easier to remove the entire cooler assembly togther. Put in a vise and remove the front and rear sections. Clean the cooler itself and housings. Install new o-rings with eng assembly lube (helps w/ installing the housings back on). Ive been lucky one time to have both housings go on w/o putting them in a press. Be careful you can break the aluminum housings.

thanks!! is that a place I could get coolant mixing w/ oil what about replaceing the whole unit as apose to just the o-rings.? I found the thing today,, but how hard is it to get out? thnaks a gain J

It is a place that coolant can mix w/ the oil. You can get an entire unit but i think you still have to assemble it.

Hey ,youse guys are in the wrong forum. I am not sure if the 99 and up info is the same for our your oil coolers.

A bit of oil cooler info:

O-rings and gaskets available here:Oil Cooler Seal Kit at Dieselorings

Some can push the headers on by hand but I couldn't. I used a bar clamp doing one end at a time. If you have clamps that fit on a 1/2" pipe that would be more suitable. The bar clamp flexed a bit and was just barely up to the task.

I think we can forgive them since the 7.3 was probably not separated into NBS vs. OBS back in 2005.

Got to love the search function, but it usually helps if you pay attention to the dates and look for something a little more recent. It improves the chances of a reply.

For a more recent oil cooler thread, with instructions and pictures, read this link. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...e-of-year.html
