Curb Weight vs. GVWR

Please help me understand these numbers to be CORRECT. My 2004 F-150 FX4, 5.4, 3:73 has a curb weight of 6500 lbs. Sticker on driver's door post says GVWR is 7200 lbs. Net carrying capacity without passengers, fuel etc is 700 lbs???????????? Severely inhibits towing capacity??? I am looking at towing a fifth wheel trailer and all pin weights of the smallest trailers are greater than 500 lbs unloaded???

Where did you get that curb weight from. I have a 8' SCAB 4X4 , a bigger truck and my truck with a full tank of gas and some garbage in the back usually is around 6300 lbs on the dump scale. I fiquire mine has a curb weight around 5900-6000 with me and a full tank.

But if that weight is correct then your conclusion of 700 lbs of capacity is correct.

zr800 -- Assuming your truck was empty, your curb weight of 6500 lb must be incorrect. Looking through the factory specs for the 2004 F150 (available on this website), curb weights of empty trucks ranged from 4788 lbs for a regular cab short box 4x2 configuration to 5502 lbs for the 4x4 SuperCrew. Better go back and check that 6500 curb weight figure. I'm sure you will find that you have more payload capacity than you fear.

Thanks guys. Should have mentioned that my truck is a SCAB. What I am seeing in the Specs section on this site is 6495 curb weight. Or am I reading something incorrectly????

According to the spec sheet that came with my 2004 SCAB, 5.4l, 4X4, 3.73 rearend, 6.5 ' box, the truck weight is 5115 lbs. The GVWR is 8200 lbs(Trailer tow Package). The max loaded trailer weight for this truck is 9300 lbs. With a 20% hitch weight of 1860 lbs you won't exceed the payload of 3085 lbs.

Ahh, I see that I missed some of the higher curb weights (my range should have gone up a bit higher for the 5.4L models). My mistake.

However, I think it is safe to say that the 6495 figure is a typo -- it should read 5495 lbs. If you look at the numbers before it and the number for the supercrew, which would definitely be heavier, it looks like a typo to me.

bdmcdonald,

You better read your spec sheet again. All trucks with a 8200# GVWR have an 8' bed and 4.10 gears, it is called the Heavy Duty payload package and is separate from the trailer towing package.

According to the 2004 Ford F-150 Brochure: Your FX-4 SC with 5.4 will have a 7300 # maximum towing capacity if you have a 132.5" wheel base. I got that figure from looking at the chart on PG 41. The chart shows 7800 # for a 4X4 SC with 5.4 and 3.73 rear/ 132.5" WB. Under the chart it states to reduce max weight by 500 # for FX-4 and Lariats with 18" wheels.
The chart also states that these weights are figured for conventional towing (meaning towing from bumper hitch) I see where you are wanting to tow a 5th wheel type trailer, that will only change the weight ratio between the axles on your truck and not change the total weight of your trailer any.... obviously, so I would imagine that if you still stay within the 7300 # you should be fine
If your truck is 144.5" WB, it bumps your max tow weight to 9300#, 8800 for FX-4
Hope that helps you out

both my 04 @ 05 scab 5.4L full tank truck mt came in @ 5700lbs on the scale at the grain elevator which i trust cause we have them checked every 60 days...

bdmcdonald 01-17-2005 02:16 PM

I'll check again, but the sheet I got was from the dealer and it didn't mention the 8' box. I think my truck is only 7200 LBS GVWR anyway.

Thanks for your input guys, I will scale my truck this week and post weight, obviously there must be a typo in the spec sheet posted on this site regarding curb weight for my truck
