Truck Avenger Carb Problem

I have just purchased a Truck Avenger 670 for my F150 with a 302 and I am having a very bad sputtering, coughing and sometimes stalling problem off idle or on light acceleration. It starts good and has great power if you put your foot into it and get past the sputter. I have checked float levels, vaccuum spec's (19"), have the correct voltage going to the choke and have adjusted the idle mixture to try to solve this problem. I have read alot of postings (after i purchased this wonderful carb :-X15 ) from people having similar problems and alot of them have had to change all sorts of things on their carb (jets, accel nozzels and pumps etc)...which seems like alot of fussing for a brand new carb which is suppose to be close to almost perfect out of the box. Any info or suggestings would be great.

I haven't had any experience with the truck avenger, but the Street avenger series are fairly reliable. I have a 570 Street avenger on my 331 stroker and it pulls like a runaway frieght train. Some have told me I'm a little undercarbed but I'm only giving up a little top end. Holley's are bad tempered though.

Holley's for the track, Edelbrocks for the street.

Sanders,

Thanks for the info... I was talking to a local ford guru today and his suggestion was to return the Truck Avenger 670 (being to much carb for my little 302) and get myself a Street Avenger 570 or if I have the bucks get a Road Demon 570. I also talked to Holley's tech line and they suggested that the Truck Avenger 670 is sometimes to much carb for small blocks and suggested getting a Street Avenger 570. The new carb is on order and I should have it installed in the next couple of days. I will keep everyone posted.

670 CFM is big enuf for a 460, way too big for a 302.

Unless it is a boss 302 :-X10 j/k

670 CFM would run a 302 to nearly 8000 RPM at 100% VE according the Holley charts. Their directions say to use a SMALLER carb than the chart shows also. For a 302 use a 450 CFM or smaller carb. I usually use 1.5 x cubes to figure the MAX size carb for a street engine.

Thank you for your advice. I installed the street avenger 570 yesterday and the stalling problem is gone. The carb works great with that motor. One thing, when going up a long hill at a continuious speed the engine starts to ping now. Would this be an indication that the carb is running to lean, causing the combustion chambers to over heat?

Yes, itis possible. You might double check the timing. Maybe back it off 1 or 2 degrees and see if it goes away.
