Some help is needed
 

Hello:

I'm new here at the site. I recently purchased a 1972 Ford "L" series 700 truck.
It has what I "think" is the 361 XD engine. It has a manual trans and 2 speed rear.

Can anyone tell me anything about this engine?

This would be the low compression, industrial version of the 360 FE motor used in pickups. My past experience with these motors has been good as they were quite durable motors.

I was wondering as I never really heard of this engine before.
I "thought" it looked like an FE but wasn't sure.

For an old truck motor, it is amazingly tight, it looks like someone took very good care of it.

As stated this engine family is closely related to the FE but has a steel crank, a slightly different block casting (at least the numbers are different) but most if not all parts will interchange.

Interesting. I didn't know about the differences. It seems that it was made with truck duty in mind. It also has a pretty impressive dual exhaust system, with the FoMoCo part #s still on it!

I forgot to say, this is referred to as a "FT" engine instead of an "FE". Many of the parts from the "FT" are in demand by the FE people such as the crank. Other parts are not so in demand, I think for example the heads have small valves as you would expect for a truck motor. In any case this does not belong in the 534 forum. Move on down to the FE forum and repost the question and you will get much better information.

Many thanks for the words of wisdom. As to why it was posted here, it was because I had no idea what engine "family" this thing belonged to. I had never heard or seen anything of it before.

I'll hop on over to the FE pages and see what they have to say also.
