New to Ford, need intel
 

I have my first domestic Ford (98 expy eb) had a FIESTA years ago but that is british. Anyway everything I've had has run nicely with 10-30 Castrol for decades. So what's the "preferred" item for the 5.4? I know it's 5w-30 but what is "Ford oil" and why take it over 5w-30 Castrol? I change at 3k miles all the time and won't use a Fram (flame on) and try to do good things for my vehicles. I'll take some useful info please. Data is nice too!8D

Ford now recommends/approved using 5w-20 for you expy according to a TSB on ALLDATA, but I would recommend going you your Ford Dealer and finding out what they recommend you use. Ford oil is Motorcraft and on the bottle is says it is a synthetic blend.

I seriously doubt you'd be flamed here for not using those orange "lemons" known as Fram Filters.

At 3000 mile change intervals it probably doesnt matter, any SL-rated brand will do fine. Since your profile shows MI, 10W-30 may be too thick for winter. I would not "retrofit" 5W-20 back to an earlier truck, but that is just me. It is out of warranty, so Ford is not responsible if you have problems. Many of us are looking for the "holy grail" of lubrication and extend our drain intervals a bit. I use Chevron Supreme or Delo 400 with Motorcraft or Purolator filters and annual changes (up to 6000 miles).
