Teardown of VGT turbo

I have the Garret EVRT turbo nearly completely torn apart...took apart my spare :)

I'll post a BUNCH of pictures here in a day or two, as soon as I get my camera back...so keep your eyes peeled.

This thing is both complex and simple at the same time...I'll discuss more as soon as I get the pictures, just thought I would go ahead and post ;)

That will be really neat to see. Just curious, what kind of camera are you using?

IB Tim 11-19-2004 07:03 PM

So who is going to be the first one to ask... why he has a spare :-X24

Daryl Hunter 11-19-2004 07:54 PM

OK, why do you have a spare?

IB Tim 11-19-2004 08:01 PM

Because he likes to test them to extreme...boy are we the only ones on FTE tonight...way slow night

they are a strong turbo as PSD has pointed out when he melted his engine. cant wait for the twin turbo 6.3 with 600 hp stock. :):)

Yeah, I have to say I don't like the inefficiencies associated with the vanes restricting airflow, but those vanes also reduce turbo lag, so its a trade off, but there are other ways to reduce turbo lag, so why not have a normal turbo, so you can have more power...

SBV45 11-20-2004 07:54 AM

Because then there would be wastegates, relief valves, and other stuff.

Yeah I think it was a pretty clean trade-off, very little lost boost less parts and they really have reduced the lag by maintaining boost at low engine speeds. I also remember PSD 60L saying that he had noticed trans. slippage while running the "propane and water". From that I can see that he is certainly pushing the envelope to see how much these engines can take and then just how much the accessory components can handle, so I understand why he has a "spare" turbo just waiting for it's turn to roast. Nice to see someone else pushing theirs so I will know in the future what I can and can't do to mine. PSD, thanks for the great info., can't wait to see these pics, Mat.

OK, why do you have a spare.... there I asked.

Was I the first?

Dam, day late and $2.00 short (inflation - up from $1.00)

SpartanDieselTech 11-20-2004 09:59 PM

The "spare" is off the toasted engine (but for the most part totally undamaged).

I will get the pictures in here soon....very busy few days :-hair
