I have a few F4TE 351W questions

The truck that has it is a 95 F250-350 and it was built on 12/94, would this have the F4TE engine in it? Also is there a way by just pulling a valve cover to tell if there is a roller cam in it? The distributor is out and the intake is still on there so I don’t know of a way without having to take the intake off at the salvage yard.

Should have the F4TE but your gonna have to look near the starter for F4TE along with the long casting number.

Intake is gonna have to come off to identify the roller spider retainer. I thought only the 97 f250+ 351w trucks used an oe roller cam but I would be interested in knowing what you find out. Good luck

The roller cams require a steel dizzy gear and the flat tappet cams are cast gears so you may be able to tell if you have a roller cam by checking out the dizzy gear?

The distributor is gone but it is a F4TE-AA block, F5TE water pump and the truck was built in Dec. of 94 so at least I have the roller ready block thing going for me. :-X20

I picked up the engine! Turns out it has E7TE heads and a factory roller cam in it. It came with the injectors, rails, harness, pulleys, brackets, upper intake and a few other things that I’m not sure of what they are for a whopping $150. 8D I was told the engine only had about 75K on it also.

:)

Sounds like a pretty good deal. The E7TE heads are used on the trucks. The next best cast head from ford is the GT-40 and the GT-40P heads. I think the truck intakes share the same design as the GT-40 intakes so the lower intake maybe worth a couple of bucks. I have seen them for sale at swap meets for around $30 to $40 but that was a year or so ago. The wiring should have some value as well since it's not the speed density set up.

I got cam specs from someone on Stangnet.com,

The roller 351 will have an F4TE cam. Duration is 256/266 (int/exh)- advertised not at .050. I don't know the @ .050 specs. Lift with 1.7 rockers is .449 intake and .476 exhaust. With 1.6's it's .422/.448. I've run this cam in a roller 5.0 with ported E7's and a Ford A321 intake topped with a 600 Holley VS carb, backed by a 4 speed and it was a blast to drive day in, day out in my 89 Ranger. Pulled from idle to valve float at 5500 rpms. Ain't half bad in my 6000 lb E150 van either From what I gathered from Ford's description of how they compared cam specs in the "Official Ford 5.0 book" it's optimized for lower compression ratios, so I don't think I'd try to use one in a higher compression motor. The 5.0 I have it in has only a high 8 to low 9 comp ratio and would run on the cheapest gas you could put in it.

There is one simple way to ID a 351 ( or 5.0 for that matter) for a roller cam...... Just pull one valve cover and one rocker arm. Then pull the pushrod out and measure it. The roller pushrods are considerably shorter than non roller pushrods. The difference in them on 302 rods is 3/4". By the way, thanks for posting my cam spec post from SN here. :-X22 Lots of guys underestimate the F4TE cam. Like I posted on SN, it's a great street cam even with a carb. Like to get another for a future 5.0 or 5.8 build.

I have the F4TE in a 1985 F150 but whoever put it in there used the wrong distributor gear and some cam gear teeth are broken. Jumps time like crazy. Anyway, what cam can I replace it with? The motor has been changed to a carb (stock Ford 2V). It's a 4x4 and I'd like to get a good roller cam for not a huge amount of money.

Too bad they didn’t swap the distributor gear because I think if you just added a 4V with a dual plane intake you would have loved it. What kind of driving do you plan for the truck and how is it set up?

The 302 HO cam works good in them with EFi , not sure about the carb ...Lew

cr506 01-27-2010 03:23 PM

My plan is to put in a good cam, add a dual plane intake and a 4V carb. I've got long tube headers on it and the stock heads. I plan to use it just to run around in and take it fishing and hunting. I don't need to go fast, I just need to keep good torque so I won't get stuck. I am about 2 weeks away from rebuilding it and I want to get the right cam.

lew52 01-27-2010 04:03 PM

The HO cam is just a mild roller cam that is usally chep & easy to find & is a upgrade to the stock cam, others will chim in on other cams ....Lew

Shernius 01-27-2010 06:00 PM

Stock 302 HO roller cam should be .444 lift (w/ 1.6 rockers), 266 duration, and 204 duration @ .050" I believe.

Nope.. not even close. Here's a pic of the lowers for the 5.0HO, 5.0 Truck, 5.8 Truck, and GT40/Explorer.
