Pinion Seal Replacement (rear differential)
My rear differential seal is leaking and needs to be replaced. I checked out my recently purchased 1997 CD Manual and it lists three tools required to replaced the seal. I then called the company the local Ford dealership uses to purchase tools (DTX) and got the pricing.
Pinion Seal Replacer tool = $57.00 Companion Flange Holding tool = $73.00 Companion Flange Replacer tool $85.00 Does anyone know if this can be done W/O buying these tools or a better place to buy the tools? http://campaigns.ford-trucks.net/for...cons/icon6.gif |
You might try your local tool trucks. Or some of the parts supplys loan tools. Around here they do. I don't know about where you are and I don't know if they have the tools you need, but it is worth the try. Before you buy them, check the cost to have it replaced. I replace them on my older vehicles with no trouble, but I never tried on the newer ones. Good luck with it.

I replaced mine ok in my 98. All I needed special was the tork socket to uncouple the driveshaft from the flange. I don't remember the size or number of points for the socket. I followed the instructions in the Haynes Repair Manual. Good Luck.

Thanks
Thanks for your reply. I was thinking it probably could be done W/O all the special tools. I bought the seal from Ford for 18 bucks and was thinking of buying a 5 dollar one from Discount Auto Parts or AutoZone to "practice" with.
I bought my 97 EB 5.4 new and it now has 183K miles with no problems other than Oxegen Sensors. The warm climate (Florida) is much easier on vehicles and keeping up with the routine maintenance keeps 'em ticking. Thanks again, http://campaigns.ford-trucks.net/for...cons/icon7.gif |

Thanks for your reply. I just replaced mine last W/E and used a 12 point 12mm socket that worked on the torc bolts. I did puchased a good gear puller for which I'm thankful. Separating the Flange from the pinion spline shaft was rather difficult.
Thanks again. http://campaigns.ford-trucks.net/for...cons/icon7.gif |
