88 Bronco II suddenly dies while driving

On going problem with my 88 BII 2.9 2WD
Cranks up fine. Runs fine. Take off and a mile down the street it dies. After it dies and you try to crank it you cannot hear the fuel pump come on as you usually can. Let it set for an hour or two and it will crank right up and run till it decides to stop. It only seems to do this while going down the road. I've treid to simulate this at the house and I cannot.
I've changed Fuel pump relay, ECC relay. Both in-tank and in-frame fuel pumps. Ignition coils and the control modual and stattor. Any ideas are welcome.

Welcome to FTE!!!

Did you confirm no power to the fuel pump(s)? Try spraying starter fluid into the TB when she's a no-start, this will confirm no fuel.

I would suggest identifying why it stalls and won't start. When it stalls, do you have spark? fuel pressure at the fuel rail?

check the module on the back of the distributor. If it gets too hot, It breaks the ignition circut untill it cools, thats what was up with mine :-X09

EEC relay

Had a similar problem in my 89 BII. Turned out to be the EEC relay had a broken wire internally that would sometime make contact & than would not. Replaced the coil & checked out the module on the the distributor. Shot some gas thru a vacum port into the plennium and she started for a second. Checked the wireing to the fuel pump an no current. Checked the fuses & they were ok. Then checked the fuel pump relay & EEC relay against a new one using an ohm meter.Found opening on EEC relay . Moved the EEC relay & had contact & could hear a loose or broken wire on the inside. My 2 cents of advice. :-X01

I'm sure it's the problem because you cannot hear the fuel pump come on when trying to crank it during one of it's tantrums. I just don't have a clue to why it does this so random. And the problem clears up after it sets awhile.

No fuel pressure at all when it stalls. I do have spark. You cannot hear the fuel pump when trying to crank it during the stalls

I got a new dis and a new relay for both the fuel pump and eec. New ignition coils as well. I hate that I live in the flat lands of Texas becuase I'd love a cliff to push it off of.

Check the Inertia Switch.

I had the exact same problem with the wife's '88 BII.
After a lot of testing I finally traced it down to a defective inertia switch.
I replaced the switch about six months ago and haven't had any trouble.

Another thing to look at is the connector at the fuel tank.
I've had trouble with that connector on several Bronco's.

Good luck.

I have'nt checked that and thinking about it that sounds like the thing it could be. Where did you find the switch at? Is it on the passengers kick panel?

Inertia switch sits just to the right of the transmission hump, under the top edge of the carpet, on the firewall.

Had same problem on my 87 BII,IT was a bad inertia switch before you by one the next time it cut off, short wires together

galenabill 12-04-2004 11:33 AM

You were right changed out the inertia switch and I have not had a problem since. Thank You for your reply. My daughter is really happy to get her BII back.
Know anything about dog grand caravan trannies?
