You can make your own adapter. I brought a piece of one inch thick aluminum to my machinist with my bell housing and T5 and he made an adapter. worked fine.

I like the adapter fabrication idea. Is there any documentation available for the design? How did you know how thick to make it. Do you have a photo. I love the idea of a T5. My F3 with 4.86 final drive ratio could use one.

Adapter

I installed a T5 in my 1950 Ford Convertible and will be doing the same in my 50F1. Although no documentation per se, I can help you somewhat.

I bought a 1 inch thick aluminum plate 12"X12"X1". I took the plate to my machinist with my bell housing and T5. I had holes drilled for recessed cap screws holding adapter to bellhousing and he also machined the hole opening for the input shaft as well as locating the T5 and drilling the holes in plate to attach the T5.

Yes I have pictures but am not sure how to insert them as I am a new member

Dick:

I would love to see your pictures. The sequence is like this:
1) At the page top, click on "Galleries".
2) Click on "Manage Your Gallery"
3) "Create Album"
4) Fill in the blanks and follow the instructions.

Send a reply when you get your pictures in an album.

OK, I d made a gallery. You can see the t-5 adaptor, a mock up on a spare block and a few pictures of my F1 project.

Very cool. Thanks. Is the T5 from an S10? How much should I expect to pay for one? Anyway to evaluate the condition?

Thanks

T5 Adapter

The T-5 was form a 88 S-10 and was 125.00. It had 65,000 miles on it and had evidence of recent repairs (blue goop). I put it in and it worked.

The longer output shaft on the T-5 and the 1" Adapter plate equaled the length of the output shaft of the cars overdrive. I had about 3/8 of an inch available to cut off the very end new output shaft, if necessary. But it was not necessary.

Richard
Please make a note that the wonderful job Dick did was on a CAR Bellhouseing, the Bellhousing standard to these trucks was much shorter.

SteV8e 11-08-2004 07:50 AM

How much thicker would an adapter need to be for a truck bellhousing? Or, should a car bellhousing be used instead?

4tl8ford 11-08-2004 11:53 AM

The diference is significant.
You would end up building a pyramid looking device that would be a bear to align.
I would look for someone to swap bellhousings with.
A lot of people look for the truck bellhousings when they want to put a late Flatmotor in an older vehicle and keep the original tranny.
I'm looking for a car bellhousing now so that I can mount a Ford Top Loader in my Panel.

Does the 51 6-cylinder flathead use the same bellhousing. I would like to replace that non-syncro 4 speed.
