1997 F-150 ABS Light and Brake Light

Hi. I have a '97 F-150 4.2L 4X2 with a manual trans. It has about 49,000 miles on it. The ABS light is on as well as a the Brake light which is on slightly. I saw a post from 2002 that touched on this but I did not see a reply. Any idea what this is? The book said if the brake light is on that brake fluid may be low. I checked that and did find it to be slightly low but nothing major. I added some fluid but the lights are still on. Any help would be great so I don't have to take it in and have it scanned.

Thanks!

This happened to me. I had to replace the brake pressure switch, which i got from a wrecked f-150. after i replaced that, my abs light turned of and all was well. Im not sure if you have the same problem that i had, when it happened to me my brake lights wouldn't turn on when i hit the brakes. but its worth a try. Only cost me around $20.

Thanks for the help! I'll check into it and post back. I believe my brake lights are working (at least I haven't been run into or pulled over yet!) but I will check them. I have also heard from friends that it could be the ABS sensor in the rear differential or possibly the whole ABS unit.

Thanks again!

I was in the same situation. Here's what I replaced.......first i replaced rear abs sensor.....then i replaced the abs module....then i replaced the abs valve(under the brake cylinder). If its the abs module, go on ebay cause a guy was selling them for 9.99 each and i paid $100. The abs valve i got off a 97' from the junkyard for $75 (canadian) because dealership wanted $400.

I don't think autozone can scan abs codes. I had the sane problem on my 98 and the problem was the abs solenoid under the brake reservior. It could also be the abs module under the dash or the abs sensor on rear diff like was said earlier in post. To pull abs codes you have to ground a wire behind pass kick panel. Pretty easy to do. I think it is a brown wire with stripe but not positive. If you need, I can check.
