2001 F250 4X4 NOT ENGAGING ESOF switch
 

I have a 2001 F250 4x4 and the ESOF switch not engaging hubs, currently I have no 4x4 lights coming on in the cluster when i turn the switch. I am not experiencing any of the vaccum symptoms that most people are suggesting. I When I turn the switch i also do not hear any relays clicking. Relays have been tested, and i waited for the 45 second transfer delay that the manual mentions. ESOF switch has power, and is working properly (I know because I bought a new one in attempt to fix the problem) Basically I have no responses from any of my 4x4 indicators or parts. ANY SUGGESTIONS.

have you checked your vacum hoses in the wheeel wells, that run from the frame rail to the spindle. they are bad about splitting and leaking vacum. sometimes the split is hard to see, ussually where the hose goes over the nipple. have a ford day!

Looked there but, nothing. Also remember when i turn the switch nothing happens, I cannot even hear a relay kick to turn on a vaccum.

ok hopefully this helps.... I'm going by what you've posted so far, and looking in the '99 service manual CD (I figured this may get you close, they didn't change them that much) this is what I came up with..... copied from the manual:

to sum it all up, check your fuses... one in the panel under dash and one in the distribution box (under hood?) if this doesnt get you going in the right direction let me know and I'll try to post and print each page of the trouble shooting chart (each of those E#'s opens another page with a diagram of what to do...monkey proof)

I am having the same problem with my 01 F-350. I checked all the fuses.

Any other suggestions out there?

Mine don't want to work every now and then. I get out and work the hubs back and forth myself and they work fine after that!!

I'd start by checking/cleaning the connectors on the transfer case. Sounds like a commmunication problem.

The 4x4 lights on the dash have NOTHING to do with the vacumn system whatsoever !!! The dash indicator represents the position of the transfer case motor only, the is no indication of operation of the hub vacuum.

Check voltages at the connector of the trannsfer case motor.

If you remove the motor you can also apply 12v to it to the pins to check the movement of the motor.

With the motor off truck, you can crank the transfer case with a socket wrench (3/8 square drive I think) to selection of the 4x4 (2wd-4HI-4LO) and this should light the dash light (with ignition key turned part on).

Be sure to mark the position of the crank nub and the motor spindle BEFORE you play with it so you can put the motor back on afterwards!

On my 2000 F250 I found the motor was powered and turning but the plastic worm gear inside had stripped, so it was making the noise of moving but not actually turning tha transfer case nub.

Under the hood I have two small black boxes one has a few relays and 3 fuses and the other had a place for two relays which were not there so I put two relays in and everthing works perfect. now. I just bought the truck so I don't have any ideal who or why anyone would take them out..Thanks for all the help..

like was mentioned above, check the 2 connectors on the transfer case. My brother had the same problem on his '01 and it was those plastic clips coming loose. you can either go buy new connectors or use some zipties or glue to hold them on.

i have the sme problems as above nothing is working i checked the fuses i checked the plugs the six prong connector has power while the two prong connector has no power to it in 4wd mode or 2wd mode any help please

Do a search on vacumm solenoid. You'll find loads of information.

If the light on the dash does not come on it is either an electrical problem or the shift motor on the transfercase is not working. If the light comes on, and the truck isn't in 4x4 then it is a vacuum/hub problem.

If anyone needs a shift motor I have one collecting dust that you can have on the cheap. It's a Dorman, installed it and found out my problem was electrical, not the motor.
