240 swap to Dodge

Have had a few 300s in the the past, Just got this 240, have slowly been gettin it put in the truck. I know somebody will try to burn me for it, but the pickup is a 74 dodge w100. It had a 360 with a 727 auto in it. Acquired a 240 with a 3 speed for free out of a 74 van. Got the motor and tranny sittin it the pickup. Just got little stuff to finish up with before I have it going. Still got to do: Wire it all up, hook up exhaust (which is 2.5" into a 31" glasspack to front of bed then straight up into a 4" stack), radiator, new starter, need to have a driveline made, and build some clutch linkage, then just minor stuff. Might just put together a hydraulic clutch for it (might be easier). I have been reading the forums on here for about a month now. Any help or suggestions are welcome.

I guess it would be a FODGE. Anyways, I put a new starter on it today, changed the oil and filter, and hooked some stuff up. Got it started. Hooked up the exhaust. Sounds pretty healthy. I was hoping it wouldn't sound ricey. Guess I got lucky there. lol Still have to build clutch linkage or fab up a hydraulic clutch, install the radiator, put a new fuel pump on it, build or buy a shifter for the 3 speed, and have a driveline made. So far, so good though. I was impressed. Not bad for a motor that has been sitting for about 8 years. I'll try to keep yall updated. This is just a little project I felt like doing in my spare time which is very little. But it keeps me busy. I have owned a few Fords with the 300 in it. Was always impress at how durable they were. I ran across this motor and tranny from a fellow amateur radio operator. Hard to pass up on it for the price (free). Didn't feel like rebuilding the 360 and the 727 transmission. Figured what the hell, why not try this. Anyways, I'm rambling. See yall later.

figured i'd give an update on it. Got a new fuel pump to put on it, and a new voltage regulator. Got the radiator in it, but it has a leak. Still have to have driveline made. I think I'm going to try and come up with a hydraulic clutch. Going to but the #7667 shifter to put in it in a week or two. Has about 30 psi oil pressure at idle, about 45 psi at 2000. Eager to get this thing going. I should be happy with it. Never had anything but good luck out of the previous 300s I've owned. Just never had one in a dodge. lol. I think I'd rather have the 240 ford motor in it, than the slant 6 anyday. See yall later.

A hydraulic clutch might be easier.

do you have any pics of the engine mounts ?

ke5adb 10-17-2004 08:19 PM

engine mounts... well, i took the crossmember out of the van (donor) and bolted it to my existing crossmember and frame. seemed to work pretty good. otherwise stock engine mounts. will try to get some pics on here soon.

btw, still need to fab up a bracket for the power steering pump, rigged up a tranny mount til i can come up with something better. But i'm confident it will work. Got the alternator wired up today, and put new fuel pump on it. got to come up with some hyd clutch stuff and shifter. Going to try to go have a driveline made this week. Got the speedometer hooked up. lets see, what else......not the prettiest setup in the world, and plenty of backyard engineering. will try to go git some pics. see yall later

Bought a ford 1 ton 2 piece driveline friday. I need to put in the first one with the carrier bearing and build a crossmember to bolt it to today, and get my measurement for the rest of it so i can have the shop put the dodge rear yoke on it this week. Put in the Mr. gasket 3 speed floor shifter PN #7667 today. Seems to be a good clean install. Nice and smooth. Got my 50 gallon tank out of the bed. It was a little rusty on the inside, so I think I'll put a 15 gallon tank that i have in it. Maybe in a few weeks, i'll have this thing on the road. Still got to redo the front wheel bearings as they are worn out enough to make it challenging to drive. Trying to do it as quick as the income allows. Seems like this will be a good setup when i'm done. I'll keep yall updated.

still have to fab up something for the clutch. I think I'm going to try a do a linkage setup first. I have lots of rods, and all kinds of stuff that might work. Might go that route before I sink a bunch of money into a hydraulic setup.

Built a crossmember for the carrier bearing out of 1 1/2 rebar tonight. Just something readily available to me. Have it bolted to the frame. Should be pretty solid.

built a clutch pedal tonight out of 1/2 inch copper or brass rod, can't remember. Just ran it inside the cab underneath the carpet, then through the floor. Seems to work pretty good. Kinda stiff, lol. Most of the stuff I've done is just temporary until I can come up with some new ideas and materials. Drove it up the road and back a couple times tonight. Still got to do: Rebuild carb, new front wheel bearings, build a bracket for the ps pump, and test drive it. Might have to have the driveline rebalanced. Still got some stuff left to do on it. Will try to get some pics of it on here soon. Having some trouble with the pc so I have to use this old laptop until I figured it out. Anyways I'll shut up now. Thank yall for the comments, got a good laugh out of the "fudge".

Been awhile since I posted. Got the truck going. Ended up going with a 1 piece driveline at 64 1/2" long. works good. Might put an electric fan in it to get rid of the mechanical fan (hard to fit the right radiator in it with the mech. fan). Have drove it to work a few times. Need to get a different carb on it as this one is worn. Might just order an Offy intake, and rejet a 1 year old Edelbrock 600 carb I have. The whole setup ain't to pretty, but it works. Some things are kind of rigged up, but solid. Will put some pics on here soon.
