Painted Bumbers and Grill

I was interested in swapping my chrome bumbers out for some painted ones as well as the grill. But a body shop friend of mine advised against it claiming that the painted ones get rock chips in them and start to produce rust spots. Has anyone had this problem to deal with?

I have the XLT Sport package with the painted bumpers and grill, and no problems so far.

I guess you could always get them powder-coated if you were really worried about it?

Isn't it a bumper? Whay does everyone want to call it a bumber?

I have a 04 with the painted bumpers and yes they get chips in the paint. Chrome is a lot harder than paint. I have to once a week check for new chips
and touch them up. I had a 93 lightning and that bumper eventually got to the point that it had to be replaced.. Again I also live in michigan where they have more salt then they know what to do with.

When my bumper gets too beat up (I also have a sport package). I am going to have it Line-X'ed. I have a friend who did that and it looks pretty neat.

Anybody with pictures of the front bumper with bed liner sprayed onto it?

Yes Turfscape............ I guess you are correct, sorry.... wasn't thinking I guess!

My 03' with 31K and half of that highway miles, has only a handful of very small chips. Once a month I check it and apply touch up paint. I like the look of the sport package so it is a small price to pay for it.

I have an '03 with 25K miles on it, 1/3 city, rest highway and I have yet to find any chips. I love the look of the XLT sport.

Flexible paint IMO would be better than powder coating, PC can and does chip but a flexible urethane should last much better. Paint and chrome look good togther, I used to like the all paint look but and changing in my old age. :)

I haven't seen it on an SD, but a friend of mine who owns a tow truck line-x'ed the push bumper on one of is Mitsu tow trucks. Looks pretty good actually... I will try to get a pic...

Same reason WHY is spelled W-H-Y and not W-H-A-Y. :-X10

I chose all black for my X (as in my gallery)
and have not noticed any scratches in mine in 33K miles and 18 months...
(other than those self imposed ones where I pushed down signs :) )

may more be a factor of the type of roads you ride on and how closely you follow those rock haulers ? it's possible :)

Bumpers

I love the look of my all black XLT sport. So far no chips. The truck sure looks badass rolling down the road all blacked out at night.

Look at '99 or 2000 Super-Dutys owned by utilities, commercial users, etc... that have the painted bumpers. Every one of them I see are nothing but rust, from one edge to the other. I noticed that everyone here who's said they haven't had a problem have trucks that are only 1 or 2 years old.
