Anybody else like 73-79s?

Does anybody else like 73-79 Ford trucks? I REALLY like them. There is just something about that body style, they look SO COOL!! In 1979, my dad bought a brand-new 79 F100 shortbed, and I've been hooked on them ever since. Whenever I see a nice one, it really makes my day! Even when I see an old beat-up one, it still catches my eye. Unfortunately, 73-79s are getting really rare to see around here. In a few years, you probably won't see them on the roads anymore. I currently own 4 of them, and I intend to keep the tradition of the 70s Ford trucks going strong!

kermit 09-02-2004 07:55 PM

i love them also. check out my gallery for my baby. my dad had a '79 f150, has a '79 1 ton with the bed and not dually, used to be an airport truck, my cousin has a '74 and a '76, and my uncle had a '75 till he got his bike (easier on the pocket on gas). i have also had a '77 f100.

JohnT 09-02-2004 08:08 PM

Kermit, It sounds like your family members own or have owned some very cool trucks! I like your 73 F250, it looks very nice. I am currently restoring a 73 F100. It's 2-tone white and brown. I also have a 77 F100 Flareside, a 78 F150 Ranger Lariat, and a 79 F100 shortbed.

ranger429 09-06-2004 12:00 PM

Hey JohnT, I am also one of those 79 FORD buff's (is there any other?) I bought my 1st one brand new from Fox Lake FORD. I think I have had a 79 since I was 18. Take a peak at my gallery. I currently own 2, wife won't let me have anymore, it would be the top black F250 and the 2 tone Bronco on the bottom of my gallery. All the other truck's in my gallery are one's i have owned

JohnT 09-06-2004 04:46 PM

Ranger 429- Both of the trucks you currently own look very nice! That 2-tone brown and tan Bronco really caught my eye. All of the other trucks you have owned over the years look really cool, too. That's ashame about what happened to the original Rollin Thunder. At least you were able to get another one to replace it. When I was 19, I got my first vehicle, a 79 Ford F150 Explorer. I've always owned at least one 70s Ford truck ever since. I currently own 4, all of which I intend on keeping forever. Over the years, I'll probably add more to my collection. In my opinion, the 73-79 Fords are the best trucks ever made!-John

ranger429 09-06-2004 06:38 PM

Yeah it is pretty weird to see , I never really gave it much thought, that there are other guy's out there that bought a brand new 79 and just fell in love with that body style from FORD and now 25 year's later are still doing the same thing with them!! Jeez I am gettin old! I think that 79 was the best looking truck that FORD has produced yet. Just my personal preference.

Thanks for the compliment's on my truck's.

On a side note my wife went clothes shopping for my son today and found him this cool looking shirt with a picture of a truck on it with the body painted to signify an American flag. She brought it home and showed it to me and here it was, a 79 F series 4 wheel drive truck all jacked up! I could'nt believe it 25 years later and they are still using that body style for stuff like that!

You also got quite a few fine looking FORD's in your coral as well!!

JohnT 09-06-2004 06:54 PM

That shirt with the 79 Ford on it that your son got sounds cool! When I was a kid, I had some shirts with 79 Fords and early 80s Fords on them. I used to like to wear them on school picture day when I was in grade school!

ranger429 09-06-2004 07:33 PM

Here is a pic of that shirt I was tellin you about. It is the perfect shirt for going to a truck show, mud pit or just wearin on the 4th of July

JohnT 09-06-2004 07:38 PM

Cool!! I'll have to look for a shirt like that next time I go clothes shopping!

mpcrewcab 09-12-2004 09:43 PM

Just checking in- another 73-79 lover. I think I have 4 or 5 currently here and enough parts and pieces to build more. Current project is the next crew for a fellow member. Not to much problems with the wife and the trucks as long as she has her truck to drive too.

You can checkout my truck in my gallery. Some good looking trucks you guys got.

Awesome shirt, have to have the wife check out the local stores for the kid.

Mike- Nice 79 F350! Crew-Cab, shortbed, 4x4-VERY RARE!! I like the 2-tone black and orange paint job!- John

ranger429 09-16-2004 07:37 PM

Yes he does have a nice crew, one of these Jefferson swap meet's I will get up there to meet him and find some more spare stuff I don't need!!

mpcrewcab 09-16-2004 08:32 PM

Hey 429-- car show is next weekend- sept 25 and 26. You got quite a nice little collection there your self. Trying to sell stuff at car show and not buy more. Usually seems like I come home with more stuff that I bought.

Mike

ranger429 09-17-2004 06:41 AM

I had a '79 F250 2WD before I got my '88, and I loved it.It was a great truck and carried me thru a lot of tough times.I would've kept it,but it started having too many little troubles for me to deal with in limited amount of time I had to work on it.Fortunately I sold it to a guy who was gonna take the time to take care of it.That was a GREAT truck!!

1973-1979 Ford Pickups

I have a restored 1974 4/2 F100. The truck has been in the family since it was new. It was my father-in-laws. I bought it in 1978, the truck had rust. In 1983 we restored the truck from the frame up, all new fenders, new box, tailgate, grill, back bumper. This truck has a 360 V-8 which was a good engine, was known for valve guide problems, either you got a good one or a bad one. In 1991 the valve guides were bad, so we replaced the heads. I forgot to mention in 1983 when we restored this truck we removed the windshield, vent windows. The truck was painted the originial color Midnite Blue. We replaced all the rubber moldings, windshield vent windows, glass after the truck was painted. This took a total of 6 months to complete. We made sure the primers were dry before the main color was shot. This was all hand sanded down, and 4 coats of clear coat was applied, hand sanding between each coat. I am so glad that we took our time, it paid off because the truck was restored 21 years ago, the paint looks as good as it did in 1983. There are not many of these beautiful trucks left. When I drive it I get alot of looks. Since I am knew to FTE, I will try to get pictures of this truck on this website. I think you would appreciate the looks of this truck. No wavy lines, straight as an arrow.

I Love 73-79.s

I have a 1974 F-100 4x2 that has been in the family since new. I restored the truck in 1983 from the fame up. It looks as good as the day we restored it. We took all the glass, window frames, rubber moldings before we shot the originial color, midnight blue. Replaced all the fenders. box, tailgate, moldings. I put 4 coats of clearcoat, handsanded each coat. I sure would like to add the pictures, however, they're not accepting pictures now. Anybody, let me know what you think.

blueox76 12-12-2004 09:56 PM

Hello all! This is my first post! I have owned my '76 F250 4x4 for 14 years now, since I was 18. It is Midnight Blue Metallic (hence the username). I REALLY love these trucks, and feel like some others that have posted here. I bought mine from the original owner. He replaced the original 360 with a 428, and I have since converted to 460. I am in the process of converting from 4-speed to 5-speed. I have never poured a ton of money into her yet, but she has pretty much been there for me. She's got original paint (showing its age a little), and 120K original miles. She's thirsty, of course, so I it's only an occasional use rig (was my 2nd daily driver when I bought it, though). Since I have no garage, the weather up here is taking its toll, so I sadly need to do some damage control, but I have kept it going so far. [A little tip on the typing - an apostrophe is only used for ownership or a contraction for 'is'] Bye for now!!!!

JohnT 12-13-2004 05:36 PM

Sounds like a couple of nice looking blue Ford pickups you guys have! I am just now finishing up the restoration on my 73 F100. I was just painted around Thanksgiving time. It's 2-tone shell white and sequoia brown(original colors). I've started putting the chrome moldings back on it, and I think I may do some work on putting the interior back in this week.

A flareside and a stepside are the same thing. Flareside is Fords' term for stepside.

llewoh05 01-14-2005 02:34 AM

there is a difference. on has angled fenders. the other has rounded fenders. they are not the same thing

JohnT 01-14-2005 01:38 PM

They are the same! Check out a Ford pickups sales brochure from 79. The stepside pickup is listed as a "flareside". I have both a 77 and a 92 flareside. They are totally different body styles, but both are considered flaresides. The terms flareside, stepside, fenderside, etc. all basically mean the same thing.

BigBear1 01-14-2005 02:20 PM

their probably my favorite, but i'm from iowa so i probably shouln't be here:-X01

F150Lariat79 04-02-2005 09:03 PM

'79's are my favorite. Have had two of 'em---wish I'd kept the 1st ! Just saw

7fords 04-22-2005 01:14 PM

JohnT 04-22-2005 01:16 PM

7fords-sounds like you have some cool trucks! I too, have a 79 shortbed. Mine's a 2wd with a 351M. You're lucky if parts for 73-79 Fords are easy to find where you live! Here in IL, there aren't many of these trucks left, and parts are pretty hard to find, especially body parts.

7fords 04-22-2005 01:19 PM

johnt i live in il along the mississippi river im as west as you can go without getting wet what parts are you looking for

I didn't know there was a town called Savanna in IL, I was thinking maybe you were from another state when you mentioned seeing alot of 73-79 Fords around! I've never been to the far western part of the state, so maybe you guys do have more 73-79s out there than we have here in the Chicagoland area. Actually, I'm pretty much set as far as parts for my pickups. They're all restored now, but in restoring them I had a hard time finding body parts. I had to have alot of stuff brought back from AZ and TX because that's the only place where I could find rust-free parts.

7fords 04-22-2005 02:10 PM

johnt

good body parts are somewhat hard to find here but drivetrain parts are plentyful i have a good friend who lives in your town dan hitz , his parents dave and colleen live there to

F150Lariat79 04-22-2005 11:00 PM

Sure would like to find a good clutch pedal to linkage rod lever for
my '79---got all new parts except this. Mine has wallered hole which could
be repaired ( filled with weld & redrilled / milled ), but would like a good
original with a 1/2" I.D. hole for bushing that is still round ( not worn )...
Do any of you guys know if there are any around ??? JR
