Riding on beach - what psi tire to air down to??
 

Just want to double check with you guys..

As you all know that our tires to set 35 psi for road...when going on beach 4x4, what psi do you set for beach riding 4x4?

I believe it would good idea to set at 15psi per tire...what do you guy think?

I have FX4 with 18" rims BFG rugged 275/65/18.

8 psi or so should help out with floatation without having to worry about unseating the bead.

Unless these rims are different than the 15" rims I'm used to 8lbs is way to low. That would be way below the danger range for breaking a tire off the bead. I'd drop them to 20lbs and see how it feels. It all depends on the type of sand.

I ran around 18 to 22 , you can let out more air if you feel the truck digging down in the sand. Make sure that you have a tow rope, shovel and board. What beach are you going on ? Stay away from the water edge.

yeah i agreed that 8 psi is way too low and is perfect for rock crawling that what i did with my Jeep TJ mods rig (i sold it) hehe!

I ll stay with in 15-20psi.

I do have all stuff like tow rope etc in my truck.

15-20 is too high for a truck of this weight. 12 should be about right. Maybe down to 10 in the rear depending on how soft the sand is.

Measure your rim to ground distance at the contact patch. Then let out enough air so that your rim is now at 75% of its original height. So lets say you measure 4 inches, let r down to 3 inches. Test and take it easy so you don't pop a bead at first. If the sand is firm not as much deflation is needed.

15 or so, I get nervous below that about breaking the bead. 8 is really low.

i ride in the sand with 12psi and go about 50mph and sharp turns and tire stays on bead

Two days ago I ran on the beach south of Salvo NC in my FX4 SCAB with 20 psi in the 275/65R18 tires, with no problems. It was my first time driving on the beach, and no one had to pull me out! My buddy who runs the beaches there all the time uses between 15 and 20 on his Expedition.

20 is usually the starting point.
 

I run 20 just to make the ride a little softer. I cant image ever having a bead problem at 20 psi. You will get a little more float and lessen the wheel hop it seams, but the real traction begins below 15 psi. There is little sand in middle and Souther Indiana, but one day I hope to head to the dunes up North at lake Michigan, then I'll air them down to 15 or lower.
