When would you use a chip/module over a programmer?

I have a 2000 F150 with 4.6L and need more towing power. When would you use a chip/module over a microtuner/programmer and what are some of benefits of either? Thanks.

Chip: ability to switch modes on the fly. Costs less. Custom tuning is inexpensive.
Tuner: plug and play. Costs more. Includes code reader. Custom tuning isn't available (except as a SCT tuner, but it is PCM code specific, in other words: it works on your vehicle but not others).

Ken, what do you recomend for my truck? 2000 F-150 4.6L auto trans. You lost me with PCM code and SCT tuner. I am looking for more towing power than I have now. Thanks for your time.

Okay... a chip needs to be programmed for the specific program family in your computer. On the computer box there is a white sticker with this code (3 letters followed by 1 number). We would need that to program a chip.

With tuners, there are three options:
With tuners, no PCM code is needed. You plug it into the diagnostic port, it reads your computer and figures out what the PCM code is. It then loads the correct tune into your vehicle.

Superchips Microtuner - works with 1996-2003 F-150, Expedition, etc.. Includes a basic diagnostic code reader. Three power modes: 87 octane, premium fuel for towing, premium fuel for max performance. You can adjust shift points, shift firmness, rev and speed limiters and calibrate the speedo for tire and gear changes.

Diablo Sport Predator - works with 1999-2003 F-150, Expedition, etc. Includes an advanced diagnostic code reader. Standard power mode is premium fuel plus it can be adjusted for virtually any octane fuel. You can adjust shift points, shift firmness, rev and speed limiters and calibrate the speedo for tire and gear changes. Plus you can adjust fueling, ignition timing and more. Added bonus of being able to update it via the web with a download.

Superchips Custom Tuner - we program this for your specific application. Holds three power settings, and we consult with you on the phone about which settings you want and any custom needs you have. Contains a basic diagnostic code reader. Allows you to adjust timing and fueling (to a mild degree, not as much as the Predator). You can adjust shift points, shift firmness, rev and speed limiters and calibrate the speedo for tire and gear changes, and adjust idle revs.

A chip is preprogrammed by us and you can't adjust it. Its the least expensive choice. Any of the above options will work for your application.

Here's how to make the choice:

1. Diablo chip - lowest price, great performance. http://www.motorhaven.com/customer/home.php?cat=37

2. Diablo Predator - lots of bang for the buck. Standard built in power tuning for those who don't want to fool around with their tuning --- but with the most flexibilty for those who want to play around! :-D Extremely advanced diagnostic capabilities. http://www.motorhaven.com/customer/home.php?cat=249 -- our customers, both novice and advanced, love these units! Very good power.

3. Superchips Microtuner - works with the largest variety of Ford trucks and suvs (not an issue with your model/year). Basic diagnostic code reader. Simplest to use but not as flexiable as a Diablo Predator or SCT Tuner. Good power, but on average the Predator will give more. http://www.motorhaven.com/customer/home.php?cat=169 - put 1000 in the coupon code at checkout for a special discount.

4. Superchips Custom Tuner (SCT) - generally for custom applications and heavily modified vehicles. http://www.motorhaven.com/customer/home.php?cat=274
