After market cruise control...
Where can one buy an after market cruise control for a 1998 F150 4.6L?

I had three different aftermarkets in a '76 E150 window van that we had for 14 years. They work for a while and then they die. Very discouraging x(
When I got Clyde back in '96 it didn't have cruise and that's something I don't like to live without. From past experience I decided I wasn't going to dink around with add-ons. I pulled a complete system out of a "donor" '82 and haven't had any problems since installation. IMO it's hard to beat a Ford factory system. I checked with out parts people (I work at a dealership) and depending on labor rates should be able to get one installed at a dealership for $6-700. Higher labor rates will add to that number. what parts do you have to remove from the doner i have access to a junk yard full of them butt most are in computer controllerd cars. i wonder if the computer is needed? |
Gotta think a little .... and I may be forgetting something ...
Steering column complete, control box under dash, modulator with cable to carb, two-piece speedometer cable with sender unit, all related brackets and wiring harnesses. It's mostly a matter of following "the flow" of the cruise control system. I realize this may sound a little vague. I spent a fair amount of time studying service manuals and maintenance guides ( Chilton, Haynes, etc.) plus having a friend or two at a Ford dealership ... and as a further excuse it was a few years ago :rolleyes: |
I should also have added :-X17 that the donor vehicle should be as similar as possible to the recipient. Parts for my '85 F250 cruise control transplant came froml an '82 F250.

I have a 2004 Sport Trac and I would like to put cruise on it. The knockouts for the steering wheel cruise control paddles are very easy to get to. Does someone make an aftermarket kit that has these paddles (or similar) and rest of the required pieces in a single kit? I have put cruise on several other different vehicles (VWs, T-1000, and CJ-7) so I'm not too worried about the difficulty but I sure would like to be able to put something on that looks half way original instead of the typical J.C Whitney 2" by 1" control box. Thanks

anybody know how hard it would be to pull all the parts of truck at junk yard and reinstall them

I would doubt the junkyard would let you pull just the switches off unless the airbag was deployed and the wheel was broken. If you could find one in that condition, it looks like a fairly simple operations. Heck if you can find one like that (and the switches not broken) have them pull the entire steering wheel and then it would be very easy to remove them at home.
