more MPG out of a V10
 

Hello,

I have a coworker that wishes he could get more MPG out of his V10.

I am not trying to get into any brand wars (he has a Dodge), but generaly speaking, whats there for options?

Power is easy to build in a V10. MPG please....No know sure fire ways. Driving style and overall weight of the vehicle are BIG factors.

Do I understand that he has a Dodge V10 If so I Think he is out of luck they are gas Hogs:-X13 His best bet would to get a Ford V10 :)

Yeah. If he has a Dodge V10 you have to understand the Ford V10 is a completely different animal. The Ford V10 is a modern 6.8L and the Dodge V10 is an older design 8.0L, so there's alot of difference in engine size for starters.

I've known a few guys who have/had Dodge V10s and none of them ever saw double digits for mileage. It was introduced in the early 1980s and is a low-revving, gas-sucking torque monster. The last version listed for 2003 commercial Dodge trucks was rated at 305hp/440lb-ft. Tell your pal not to bother wasting his $$ to get better mileage out of-it ain't gonna happen. The best way, like the other guy just said, is to change driving habits-keep the RPM under 2000, stay in OD as much as possible, avoid stop-n-go driving. Also start off easy from stop lights and eliminate as much weight as is feasible.

Driving my Ford V10 in that manner is the difference between me getting 10.5mpg and 12.5mpg for mixed driving. If I stay in OD on the highway I get over 14 easily and have gotten 15 on a few trips when I traveled at a constant speed long-distance. That's good mileage for a gas engine in a 6800lb pickup.

What MountainHounda said + keep the tires at max PSI.

Take the V10 and wrap it in a Mustang or other small car - VOILA! Better MPG...

No that won't work for better milage, right foot to heavy tires would not last for maybe 10 gal or less

:-wow i guess i shouldbe happy i even got this truck .i knew whattoexpect from a 04 f-350 singer wheele fx4 auto c.c. 340 lim. and one size larger i have 0004342.7 miles qn it nowtes pulling abass boat 250 miles to lake fork texass i got 9.4 mpg. with myfoot and on cruse on the way back and still got 9.4!!in town it stayed the same. got my 1st oil change at 0004000.0 and now one week later im down to 8.6 mpg . no i dont keep my foot in i drive it like ill need it for 500,000.0 miles im going to the shop the 28th of july to see what they say and it, better not say its my driving habats.. for i dont drive it hard. alot of what i reed i think might some have been streched some and sometll ewhat ever. any heave any idea why this is happening?????

I'm trying to understand your question, are you deliberately misspelling and using bad grammer? I hope so. :rolleyes: Did your oil change involve putting 5w20 back into the engine or did something thicker get put in? Thicker oil will cause more fuel consumption...

I have tried hevier oils and never seen a MPG change, right now I am running 20-50 for the summer and my MPG is the same as it has been.

geez give me a hard question...
pick 2 or 4 clinders and pull the spark plugs and dis-connect the fuel injectors(the plug not fuel line)

Why in hell's name would you put a heavier oil in an '04? You are going to blow your warranty and any hopes of fuel conservation. Go back to the factory recommended 5w-20 or you are toast!!

I would not run 20-50 oil in my 04' V-10 !! Now why would you do that ?? I know 5-20 seems thin to what we use to run 20 yrs ago,,but man this is a new engine ment to run on 5-20,,,thats what they recomend, not 20-50 ,do what ya want I guess.

these all are tight tolence motors if you built a "old" style motor to the same tolerences you would use 5-20 oil in them too like some race cars
basiclly i would say your just grinding your cams down guess that will save gas (if your valves don't open as far)
i would say if your having a oil pressure problem and its hot try 5w30 or in bad cases 10w-30

i am not suited to a new verihickle if i had oiling problems with an `04 i would wax it up real good and shove it up the dealer's...well you get the point

well i guess to many cold ones and 6am is a bad time to post. my question is,anyone else out there getting 9 MPG with the v10? i dont drive it hard and after my 1st oil change at 4000 miles i'm down to 8.6 mpg. sorry for the last post.i'll hold my questions untill i recover and sleep it off next time.
