Help! ABS light blinking, can't shift out of park!

We have a '95 F250, SD SC LB 2wd

I've been detailing it for sale, got it smogged, all set to list it, and then....

Yesterday I started it up and the ABS light came on blinking, and I couldn't shift out of park. The light seemed to be blinking a code, which ended up being 15 short, 1 long. It has a RABS I system, and my Haynes guide doesn't list a code of 16 for the RABS I.

Anyone have similar problems? We've been bleeding money as it is lately, so to have to do a costly repair just so we can sell this truck is a horrifying thought! :'(

Go to advanced search and search for abs and my screen name, you will find more info about rabs than you ever wanted to know.

My husband and I tried to check codes this evening and are perplexed. First of all, the label under the hood says it is certified RABS I. But, we found the RABS unit behind the glovebox so it must be a RABS II, right? With the harness halves together, we get a blinking ABS light, equating to 16, and for RABS II that means the system is okay!! And again, we can't shift out of park.

Separating the wiring harness, we get no brake, engine or ABS lights. My husband tried to jump the black and orange wire, but the little test light wouldn't light up and we couldn't get any other codes to come up - the ABS light wouldn't come on.

What is going wrong!?

My husband and I called a ford dealership which informed him over the phone how to go around the ABS transmission sensor on our F150. Turn key on to first click put the transmission in N and then start it. You might need to change out the sensor. It isn't very costly. 17.99 on Napa website ships within 24 hours.

Yeah, start it in neutral, and you can probably get it checked out like that.

Tranny issuse

Had that happen to me a few years ago. A friends trailer had a short in the system. When I hooked it up it blew a fuse. Didn't find that out until later. Throw it neutral start it, and go from there. Check your fuses! That was the fix action that tiime and one other time.

Check the brake light switch on the brake pedal. I had a similar issue on a Crown Vic, the car would occasionaly not shift into gear when running, after taking apart the steering column to inspect the shifter gates, putting it back together, I discovered it was still intermittant, AND that when it was not working, I also had no brake lights. This led me to check the brake switch, which was a little loose. Aparently ford wanted to make sure you never drive without your brake light switch plugged in, so the car/truck, won't shift out of park when its not.

You could start by having someone watch your brake lights and see if they are working, next crawl under the dash and look at it. It should be attached to the top of the brake pedal lever, where the rod penetrates the firewall. You may need to take off some cover panels.

Hope this helps.
