Skid Plates
I would like to put skid plates on my Ranger. I'm having difficulty finding aftermarket skid plates that will fit the Ranger. I hadn't done a thorough search before I realized someone here may have some information that could help. Has anyone bought aftermarket skid plates for the transfer case, gas tank, radiator and differential on their 2001+ Ranger? Or should I just have a Ford dealership get OEM plates?

check junkyards for rangers with the 4x4 off road package. my 2000 has full skid plates including one that goes from the bottom of the bumper to the front crossmember.
|
2000s with off-road package had full skidplating. The newer Rangers only have it on FX4 Level II models. I have the FX4 so I got plates for fuel cell and t-case, but I had to buy one from Ford for the front radiator/differential. Going with OEM stuff is your best bet because it's easy to find and will bolt right up.

You can buy from the stealership, or go to junkyards. If you off-road a lot, and you have a buddy that welds, you may want to have him make you some heavy duty reinforced skidplates. The factory skidplates aren't usually reinforced behind, but still help none-the-less.

Does anybody know the part number for the front plate that fits an 01?

Learn how to weld and make your own. :)

I have a 2003 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4. How much is a full set of skid plates? Does any one know what Item Number they are?

That's the part number for the front plate. I paid $155 for it at the dealer. The other plates were already on my truck so you'll have to get the dealer to look them up for you. |
Is this front skid plate YL5Z-5B018-AA good for all 98 and up? I ask because I've read where the factory 2000 front plate won't fit my 98. I've always found it hard to believe.

If you want to check out this for the front skid plate. http://www.rockymountainsusp.com/ind...number=9632+SL
A little cheaper than the OEM one, but I am not sure how heavy duty it is. |
There's no pic on the site. Does it look just like the OEM?
$112 seems like a good price, but I want it to look the same and not start rusting in a year. Do you own this particular brand? |
No, I haven't bought this one, but it is the one I am going with if I don't get the OEM. I guess that you could e mail them and they would reply about it. THen you could always chrome plate it and get around the rust problem that way. The price of the metal these days makes fabrication expensive. Plus the hourly of paying the guy that fabricates.

FYI - I got a dealer to sell this $207 OEM skid plate off a 2000 Ranger for $157 after telling them I can get it on the internet for $157.89.
Go Here and search for this Ford part: YL5Z5B018AA It was tough finding this part on the internet. |
Sorry to rejuvinate an old thread, but I am looking to get a skid plate to replace the black box on my '98 4WD XLT Off-Road. I have a 3" body lift, will the OEM or the superlift type skid plate work? Anyone have a skid plate with the body lift?
Thanks! |
