Horn Problems on a '98 Ford Explorer XLT

Hope someone can help!

I recently went on a vacation for 3 weeks and my Explorer was not used....before I left for vacation my horn was loud and very rich....since I have come back it only emits a whimper and is very weak.

I have 2 questions, where is the horn on a '98 Ford Explorer XLT? and does anyone know whats wrong, or have any idea how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

I assume you have cruise control?

If so,Ford runs the horn through a relay under the dash.(at least That where they used to put it)

The horn is located under the battery. You access it from pulling down the front bottom part of the fenderwell from underneath. Your horn is actually 2 horns. They are notorious for grounding themselves out. Yours may only have one of the horns out.

When you feel in there, you will feel the power wire to one, and a jumper running to the second. My guess is the jumper has either broke or come off. If the horn grounds itself out, you will lose both the horn and your cruise. They are run through the same circuit in the main Distribution Block under the hood next to the back of the passenger side fenderwell.

Hope this helps...
