Just turbo'd my 300 six

I just put a borg warner 6.5 chevy diesel turbo on my 89 F150 EFI 300. It works incredibly well the power is amazing. I can easily keep up with a 351. boost starts at about 1500 RPM and peaks out with 9 lbs at 2500-3000. I had to change fuel injectors from 15lbs to 21 lbs 302 injectors. I also had a rich cold start condition that I fixed by adding a resister in parallel with the CTS..Now for the BIG technical question.. Will the factory speed density system run in closed loop utilizing O2 sensor IF the MAP sensor is getting 0inches or positive pressure while the TPS is at half throttle. Also I wonder if the computer in closed loop mode will be able to reduce the pulse width enough on the injectors so it will not be running too rich. I havent yet installed the 02 sensor yet. This thing is great but I am trying to retain some MPG when im not hogging on it.. Any input would be great. Thanks

How did you do it? Was it hard? I would like my 300 to leave 351s behind it. what did you do about bracketry and belts?

kens64 07-22-2004 04:00 AM

Thats sweet. Do you have any pics?

cjbronco 07-22-2004 08:35 AM

Yeah man post some pics. That would be awsome to see. Ive been looking into it, but never went to much futher than looked. How much did everything end up costing you..? Did you fab. the piping yourself? Would your set up work on a 1982 carb 300 with the correct carb? :-X01

It is Load and RPM based so it will depend on what the factory settings are in your PCM. Even if it reaches those parameters, it still wont go into open loop until a preselected time is reached...the one in my V8 PCM is set for 15 second after a certain Load and RPM is attained.
One way to know for sure is to put a wideband on it and monitor your Air/Fuel ratios. I would strongly recommend you getting one anyway with a boosted application. Better to see it go lean and shut it down than to have it go lean and not know it until something breaks.

BTW...nice job on the turbo!

Your 300 six SUCKS!!!! Hey E-man, it's just me givin' you a hard time. HA HA HA
You get your brother's 3.8 Fiero going yet????

I've ridden quite a bit in his 300 turbo. I gave him that turbo and to be honest with you, I didn't think it would work. It works excellent. I don't think one could engineer a better turbo for a FI 300 application. It sounds like a mini-Cummins with his 3 inch straightpipe. It MOVES!! What was it, didn't you have a hard time maintaining 45 MPH up the Columbus hill (6% grade-2 miles) with a 4 wheeler in the back and now you can easily gain speed past 80? I think you should market this.

Aww man yall are getting me all excited. :-hair I've been waiting to find another 300 to rebuild and turbo so I could have some transportation while doing it, but it aint so easy :\. How much down time was there? S***, it sounds nice, I think I hate you :-X01 (envious) :-X10
Oo.

Lets see some pics of this set up. Im interested to see if it would work on my carb 300. Whats the total build price...?

Hey guys, As you can see I'm new here. I ordered a Turbo for my 5.4 screw and can't wait to get my hands on it. SkidmarkRacing is the company that produces it. He makes them for other motors as well. He put the prototype on his truck and it dynoed at 401 rwhp and 538tq. That was on a completley stock 5.4 and no tune.

It is simply amazing what a GM 6.5 turbo can do for a 300. I actually like to drive my pickup now. Im doing more fine tuning . I have the 02 sensor installed again but realized through my travels that DCL data wasnt available till late 91 on pickups. Im guessing its going into closed loop...no more codes. I have wastegated the turbo to 8psi. I get no detonation on 88. I built my own blow off valve and calibrated it to pop off at 15 PSI. My next step is to drop from 21lbs injectors to 19lbs. Add water injection controlled by pressure switch set at 6 psi. This pickup is going to denver next week. I am trying to set this up for total reliabilty. I will be able to post first hand experience with the longevity and reliablity of this project. Here are the stats so far. Im gonna post pics tommorrow.

1989 F-150 SC SB 4x4
Enginge: 300 cid
transmission: Borg/Warner T-18 4spd.
Gearing: 3.54
Est. HP 245
Cruise RPM:2950@77MPH
boost: 8 Lbs. WOT @2000 RPM and above
Induction: Borg/Warner turbo from GM 6.5diesel
Fuel Management: Stock ECU.

MODIFICATIONS PERFORMED
MECHANICAL: custom build inlet pipe for turbine side of turbo. build new exuast system. I chose 3 inch straight pipe.
build pop off valve
build 2 "Y"'s for air box and throttle body.
build air induction system.inlet side.. requires two 3" 90 degree bends hooked to "Y" compressor side 2 90 degree bends hooked to 30 degree bend then to "Y" then throttle body

remove oil pan and weld in oil return pipe
install "T" between oil sening unit and block

ELECRTRICAL: Add 1K ohm resistor paralled with coolant temp sender.

FUEL DELIVERY: change from stock 14 lbs hour to 19 lbs hour mustang 302 injectors.

COST:

Turbo: Free about $200 to buy on ebay
Injectors: $30 Junkyard
2 3" 90's $20
2 2.5" 90's $15
3 10ft sticks alumized 3" pipe $75
High Temp hose 2' and 3 inch 1ft each $40
51" 5/16" oil line $5
Hose clamps $6
Boost guage $45

TIME:
2 full 12 hour days with a plasma cutter, welder and misc nuts bolts and metal readily available.

PROS: significant increase in power. sounds like a cummins in a way. Good engine & vehicle selection to do this. Lots of room, overall easy install.

Cons: Engine longevity will suffer. Turbos are not for everyone. You must have thorough practical and theoretical knowledge of engines. Only certain people will be able to drive your vehicle. Any detonation and or problems most typical people dont understand.

I'm wondering what the turbo did to your gas mileage. Please post after your trip if you can.

turbo300six 07-29-2004 01:46 AM

the mileage right now sucks pretty bad...went from 15 to 9 MPG...im trying to figure out if ford ever made a pre OBD II mass air on a 300...Mass air conversion is the only way I can think of to get my mileage back under light cruising speeds with no boost...PS that post above is an old post...I yanked it from a different forum...

Frost13 08-30-2004 04:41 PM

Why don't you go dyno it and post the results?
