Hard starting
My 97 PSD has decided to become hard to start. It will start alright if I plug the block heater in for the night. If not plugged in it will not start at all. It is just blowing out white smoke when trying to start. I have heard of some relay that may go bad, but no one can tell me what it is called, or where it is. I don't want to just start replacing parts until I find what works. Any help will be appreciated.

It sounds like the glow plugs are bad or the harness that goes plugs into the valve covers may be bad. The glow plugs unlike the old 6.9/7.3 are located under the valve covers and the electrical harness plugs into the top part of the valve covers, there is a problem with the harness plugs either breaking or not making contact. I would start there.

go to napa and ask for GPR109 it will cost about $18.00 and will install in 5 min. much better than a $100.00 deductable. it is located on the passenger side near the fuel filter. looks like a starter cylinder solinoid. the napa relay bolts on different but works the same.

before buying new gpr relay do a voltage check to verify that it is defective or not. Do a search on glow plug relay, there is lots of knowledgable guys on this sight.
