1966 VIN Locations

I'm trying to get my out of state 66 f100 registered in california and the DMV requires that the VIN (vehicle identification number) be in 2 locations. One is on a plate on the door and supposedly the other is on the passenger frame rail in front of the motor mount. i havn't found the frame rail location yet and, if i don't, have to take the truck to the highway patrol for them to find.

anyone with any ideas for sure where the second location is?

thanks, rerunz

Not sure if any help, have owners's manual available for the 65 which indicates "the official Serial Number for title and registration purposes" is stamped on right frame side rail approximately 24" forward of the No 2 crossmember.

Good luck,
dave

Get out the wire brush. It's on top of the right frame rail. What part of California are you in some DMV offices are better than others.

rerunz, It is on the top of the passenger side rail usually just ahead of where the axle crosses under. I was looking with a fellow member a couople of weeks ago and we couldn't see it even with a flash lite. You might have to work for it, but it is there.

I had a surprize when I found my rail number to be different from my door & title.

I think I remember reading here that sometimes they stamped it on that
frame rail back under the cab . I hope I remember right , you may do a
search on vin location . Or some more people may chime in .

john, thanks. i've used a wire brush and now a dremmel with a wire wheel and haven't found it yet. i'll keep looking. how far forward of the crossmember would you say it is? how long and how big are the numbers? can you see it from the engine compartment or from the wheel side? i've taken the wheel off so i can get in to brush. the metal is starting to look shiny in spots but still no number. rerunz

thanks, i have some research that shows some 50's ford pickups had a "third" location under the cab. i suppose you either take the cab off or get lucky with a mirror. rerunz

Howard, You should be able to see it from the engine bay. The numbers are at least 1/4" tall and run from front to back (from bumper to cab) with a * on the end. I was visiting Stockman in NY and we had to use sandpaper and wire brush to see mine but we found it. While at Raleighdads home in NC we couldn't see his, but we didn't have to find it like you do.

Prostreet is correct the number is stamped again under the cab, we don't want to have to pull it to read it. lol (two time total)

I have parted out several trucks and they can be up or back a little but generally between radiator and axle cross under.

Hope ya find it soon.

Found It!

THANKS TO ALL WHO GAVE ME DIRECTION ON FINDING THE VIN ON THE PASSENGER FRAME RAIL. THIS ONE IS LOCATED 12" TO 16" FORWARD OF THE ENGINE CROSS MEMBER ON THE PASSENGER RAIL. I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT FROM A FORD TECHNICIAN THAT THE VIN IS STAMPED IN 3 PLACES ON THE SAME RAIL. ONCE ON THE FORWARD LOCATION, ONCE UNDER THE CAB AND ONCE UNDER THE BED. thanks, howard

Pro-Street/StateTK 06-07-2004 07:26 PM

Glad you found the vin location . Since the last post I went out in my yard
and looked at a 64 truck frame I found the 2nd vin location which is under the
cab it does have a star on each side of the vin. As for there being a 3rd
location that would be on the drivers door plate , You said a ford technician
said there is one under the bed I dont think he is right because I have cut up
a lot of these frames in small pieces to pro-street trucks and the only numbers I have found back there is a casting number on my 65 had c5te on the
front crossmember the one in front of the leaf springs and the 64 had c4te!

I agree, I haven't cut one to make a race truck, but have had several beds off, and have never seen a third rail number.

I am glad you found it, sounds like it was just about where I said it was.
