i thought the 7.3 was 444 atleast thats what IH calls it on the hood of their straight trucks DT444E D being that its a "D Series" engine "T" being that its turbocharged and 444 being the cubes and "E" being that its electronically injected i may be wrong but im pretty sure to bad they didnt put the DT466E in the ford trucks thats one step better than that 444

You are correct. There are two different 7.3 engines used in the fords. They are the 7.3 IDI(In-Direct Injection) that was offered in 1988 thru 1994.5. Then there was the powerestrokes offered that were basically DT444E but nick-named "Powerstrokes". The 7.3 IDI is 445 ci and the 7.3 Powerstoke is 444ci.

I don't have a diesel, but I do have a question for you guys. What if any difference is there between the 445 and the 444 as far as block, crank, heads, etc. are concerned? I am curious as to what accounts for the 1 cubic inch difference. Any other info would be appreciated as well. My brother is considering buying a diesel and I am trying to get a handle on all this. From what I have gathered, the old IDI 7.3 is cheaper to work on than the newer one (someone said injectors were $3,000). Thanks.

Once again,
1988- 1994.5 = 7.3 IDI 445ci (in- direct injection) Old style, looks like a 6.9 but has 1/2 inch head bolts bigger pistons, and without a turbo from 1988- 1993. Can be identified by having a injector pump. Some time in 1993 they offered a factory turbo for the 7.3IDI and discontinued it in 1994.5. The 6.9's and 7.3 IDI's look almost identical and sound identical.

1995- 2001 = 7.3 444ci "Powerstroke" (Direct Injection) New style, totally electronically controlled. Different engine all together. Uses a high pressure oil system for injection operation. Very expensive to repair and most home mechanics can not fix them because of the expensive tools required. They sound very loud and can be identified by the loud turbochargers.
