534 spotted in salvage yard.....and what else?
 

Hello. First post in this group. Be gentle!!

Anyway, I spotted a 534 engine in a salvage yard yesterday. It looks
identical to the photo posted in this group. I guess one way to remember
it is by the huge water pump housing. Now maybe the one I saw wasn't a
534, but it was the same block, maybe just smaller cubic inches. I think
this was in an F700 truck, not sure.
Anyway, I have one other question. This was in a salvage yard that had
a few large trucks and another truck had a huge engine in it with a distributor
in the back of the block close to the firewall. What engine displacement would this be?
It wasn't quite sitting vertical, but had a slight tilt to it, similar to like the
distributor tilt of a big block Mopar. What displacement was it and what other
displacements were in this family?
P.S. I'm going to talk to the salvage yard owner to see what he would be asking for it. (Don't have the room for it, but it would be nice to tinker with...) Maybe I can also get a photo of the engine I was asking about.

Sounds like it could have been one of the Heavy Duty V-8's like the 302 HD, OR 332 HD. They both had the distributor in the rear.
A picture would be great. :)

dont all y blocks have the dizzy in the back to, not sure on that tho.

I'm very familiar with the "Y" blocks and this was not one of them. I'll see if I can
borrow a digital camera and upload a photo one of these days.

Getting back to the 534 engines, are there any certain heads that are
more desireable than others? Or, are all the heads the same and no
revisions were made over the years?

where was this seen at like state i want to put a bigger motor in my 77 for towing that sounds like it might be the ticket.

Well, the motor is in Nebraska. I suspect that this might be a 401 motor though.
It's in an F800 or F850, not quite sure. According to Kenny the moderator, the
F800 series had the real small motors. I WOULD like to buy a head off of this motor
and see if there would be any improvements in head flow by a simple port job.
If only these engines didn't have so much weight to them......

I would be interested in finding that out too. I'd be willing to bet that there is plenty of material to be ported, if you know what I mean. Do us a favor and measure the valves when you're in there. :-X22

Rusty, I posted the valve seat and valve head dimensions for you in the other thread in which you asked about them and in which I had given some other specs for you.
It is 2.025-2.015-inch on the intake valves; 1.640-1.630 on the exhaust valves.

In response to fordman428's question about the Y-Blocks and their distributor location, no, sir, not ALL Y-Blocks had them at the back. They did put them in the front on some of the later engines.
