when i changed my fuel filter.....

when i was changing my fuel filter, i unscrewed two screws in the botom of the fuel bowl to remove a coil of some sort so i could wipe out a little bit of stuff at the bottom when that black center support that the filter fits over popped out and some spring came out as well. now does it matter how that center support goes back in, i noticed three ribs that it looked like the support should fit into but it didnt seem to go, so i just seated the suppot, put the two screws back in that hold the coil thing down and that seemes to hold the supprt there as well. so again my question is does it matter how that support is supposed to be or just stick it in there and put the filter back in and giver?

one more quick question, in the owners manual and also i have heard on FTE that after the filter change when you first start your truck it will smoke and run a little rough, well mine didnt do that it purrs like a kitten, just wondering if that is normal sometimes as well. thanks for everybodys time.

I can answer #2....IF it injests a little air it will run rough and smoke but generally by the time you turn on the key and let the glow plugs warm, the fuel pump as refilled the filter and there will be very little air in the lines, so you won't see much if any smoke. I wish I could help with the other but I just ordered a shop manual!
