2004 Ranger speed governor-chip questions
 

Hi Guys,

Im sorry to beat a dead horse here because I have tried to read all of the posts previous to this regarding the governor on my truck, and i still need more info. It is a 2004 Ranger Supercab w/4.0 5 speed. The truck shuts off before 85-90 mph and it is driving me crazy. We have some big long highways here and i do alot of road traveling, and sometimes the shut off kills me. So, that being said, is there any new idea's getting this thing turned off or is it still about getting a chip? I really dont want get a chip for a brand new truck, because it will void the warranty. Are there any new alternatives and are there any chip makers that will guarantee the govenor will be disabled? Here is the other question, lets say i get the chip, and something major breaks on my truck that is covered by the warranty, can i install the stock chip again and get the truck fixed at the dealer or is it the point of no return once the chip is installed? I am just looking for the latest info on this dilemma, and any help would be appreciated. I just traded a V-8 Mountaineer with the governor set a 111mph which i was cool with, but 90mph??? Seems a little strict to me.

To start, have you checked the accuracy of your speedometer, I thought that the cut off was higher than that. Maybe you're going faster than you think you are. Also, a chip shouldn't void your warranty. If something happens, the dealer has to prove it was your chip that caused it. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(C))
Also, there isn't a "factory chip." The performance chip plugs into your computer box, and you can remove it whenever you want to. If you do have a problem, if you take it out and disconnect the battery for 15 minutes, it will reset your computers memory. I don't think raising the speed limiter is guaranteed, but can be done on some applications. Hope I was of some help.

With the Ranger there is no guarantee the speed limiter can be raised with a chip due to the way the ABS and speed sensor is setup. There's a way to by-pass it with hardware changes that won't screw-up the speedometer, shift points, etc. I've seen the article somewhere on the Internet for older Rangers but I don't know if it applies to the newer trucks.

Ok, i was lying before, the govenor kicks in at 92 mph, and that is either in 4th( 4000 rpm) or 5th gear(3250 rpm). So in this case the rev limiter is not a factor, but the speed thing is still a pain in the tookus!
