Ford 5.4L V.S. Chevy 5.3L

hey is the new o4 5.4L more powerful thatn the chevy? i mean is there a noticable diffrence in accerelation? what about the old one?:D :-X05

Frost13 03-01-2004 08:33 AM

The new 5.4 is rated at 300 h.p.
The 5.3 is rated at 295 h.p.
The old 5.4 was rated at 260 h.p.
I don't know if there is a nooticable difference in accelaration.
It just depends on which you like better.

The 5.4 has a lot more low end torque.

AG4.0 03-01-2004 03:23 PM

The 5.4 is a more powerfull motor in a heavier truck, so the extra power may not seem as apparant, unless you've got a load on them.

I think this was covered in another thread some time ago.

Gears are going to be the deciding factor on that one.

Bigsilver95 03-06-2004 05:16 PM

from expierecne, i own a 5.3, they are quick, if you can get in the upper RPM's, they tow like a turd though
For what it is worth, mine has 3.73's

FordLariat 03-09-2004 04:28 AM

My truck has 3.73s LS, and I have a 4.6. My Dad has a 5.3 (I dunno what gears), both trucks are extended cab 4x4, and I walk him by 2 truck lengths every time. Maybe he just sucks.

FordLariat That sounds like an impressive truck there. Is this in a quarter mile race or what. I was thinking buying a truck with a 4.6 Sounds like a powerful one you have. Time your dad got a ford.

ggarrahan 03-10-2004 12:37 PM

Before I bought my 2003 F150, I drove a Chevy with the 5.3. If I was blindfolded, I doubt I could have told which truck I was in. Power was the same as far as I could tell. Why did I get the Ford? Cause it's a King Ranch, love that interior, and, it has a moonroof!

my dad a 2000 z71 with a 5.3 before he got his 2500 HD and that truck couldn't tow our 30' boat fer nuthin.

I know a guy with a 1/2 ton Chevy with a 5.3. He pulls a 20' stock trailer with 9 cattle on it. That is probably weighing close to 14,000 lbs. The leaf springs on the rear actually arc downward with the trailer on! He could outpull our neighbor with his 460, and get 10-12 mpg doing it. The 460 got about 6-8 mpg. Our neighbor got a 99 Powerstroke Superduty. The Powerstroke can of course outpull the 5.3, but it gets about 8-10 mpg. I do not know how a 5.4 compares to a 5.3 when being used like this, but I am extremely impressed with the 5.3L.

doesnt surprise me. my cousin has a 460 and my 5.4 will tow the same stuff he tows with no problems and gets better gas mileage doing it. and both trucks have 4.10's and weigh the same.

the guy i bought mine from towed 12K once a week for about 100 miles roundtrip in a hilly area. truck didnt sag at all or have trouble pulling the weight either.

From what I have heard, the only real drawback to the 5.4L is the tranny behind it. First gear is a little on the high side. I think that the 5.4 is a good motor and is a vast improvment over the EFI 351. I do see a fair number of people pulling 16-20 ft stock trailers with 1/2 ton Ford pickups.

not sure what it is in the f150, but i know in the f250 superduty the 5 speed has a first gear ratio of 5.72. 2nd is 2.94. ive had mine almost a year now and dont have any complaints at all about the 5.4.

we have a 5.3 in a tahoe that i drive as a company vehicle when i go out of town and i dont think it would pull a lawnmower to be honest with you. it hunts for gears just driving up a hill not pulling anything. but i have no idea what axle ratio it has or anything else about it. but it has taken me offroad in places that a dodge ram with chains on its tires had to be pulled in with a dozer.
