F-150 5.4L oil capacity?

New to the forum. My son just bought 2000 F-150 4x4 with 5.4L. He wants to change the oil but has no owners manual. We have 2 conflicting sources for number of quarts of engine oil needed with filter change. Chilton manual says 7 quarts, and owners manual for friend's 2001 F-150 says 6 quarts for all engines. I doubt Ford changed oil pans between 2000 and 2001 but ....

My 2002 F150 Lariat Manual states ALL Engines (6 quarts)
includes filter change

oil

If you have the oil filter up in front of the driver side tire then you take 7 quarts. IF it is under the truck then only 6.

in my manual for the 2001 5.4 triton motor it says its a 6 quart system

6 qts is recommended by Ford. On most 5.4's when you change the oil and filter with 6qts, it will show 1/2 qt low. This is normal. I usually run 6 1/2qts myself.

The manual says 6 qts. , however the line on the dip stick will not be up to the top. This is not a problem because it is still in the "full" area. The last time I took mine to Wal-Mart and they put 7 qts. , probably just to charge me more?!

If you would like to see an online owner's manual, go to the Ford Motor Co. website, www.fordvehicles.com and register for "My Ford". Once you log in, look for a section that says "Resources and References" Click it, and you find a link for the Owner's Guide.

Filter up front drivers side under bumper = 6.5 quarts
Filter on drivers side up on side of motor = 6.0 quarts usually

Mine filter is on the engine block and it takes 6-1/2qts to reach full.

I assume the oil pan is the same size on the 4.6. My filter is under the bumper and takes 7 quarts to reach the top of the line on the dipstick.

If you fill the truck with 6qts and do the required filter change, run it for a few minutes. Let it sit for a little while and check the level, then fill to put the oil level in the full range if necessary. Then you'll know how many qts so you don't over or under fill it next time.

5.4l V8 oil capacity

if the filter is on the front of the block right above the axle it is 7 qts, on the stick it will read half a qt low but that is normal for fords, all ford engines have a half qt baffle and it can take anywhere from half an hour to 6 hours for that half qt to reach the pan, weather your ford says 5 6 or 7 qts dont add that half qt just cause it reads low, you are actually overfilling the oil if you do, i worked at a ford dealership for 2 years and managed valvoline for 3 years

What can happen if quick lube puts 7qts in and it only needs 6? Can there be any real damage done?
