Prolong Comercial

Hope this isn't a repost, but have you seen the prolong comercial on TV, that looks like an fe engine they are running? they say in the ad no oil pan and all the oil is drained out, but the motor keeps on running because of the Prolong that is still on everything like residual oil or something. maybe I am wrong, but it sure looked like and FE to me.

ha ha that would be nice!

I'd be real surprised if that was an fe they were using, it would be cool though. Unless we found out they burned up a 427 to make their stupid ad. Best of my knowledge prolong is snake oil.

fordeverpower 02-17-2004 10:15 PM

what exactally is snake oil?

proeliator 02-17-2004 10:17 PM

any product that promises more than it delivers...that is more hype than fact. Its an old term...

fordeverpower 02-17-2004 10:19 PM

thanks, have heard the term but i am young and dumb!

proeliator 02-17-2004 10:24 PM

We all were once.

Come to think of it, now I'm just old and dumb ;)

Anyways, with todays oils I don't see any need to put any of these oil additives into a healthy engine. In some cases they will do more harm then good...

The thing was that in the olden' days, 1920's and 1930's (maybe even before), people would cart around these displays and sell "Indian Snake Oil." It was supposed to be good for everything and do everything known to man, and more. Really it was usually nothing more than vegetable oil. They made a killing off of it.

That's where it came from, as I understand it. If someone knows more, please inform!

On the prolong, I would think an FE would work about the best for this test. It's got relatively big rod and main journals to absorb the energy, and a relatively large bore and piston skirt to spread out the damage.

Prolong is and isn't snake oil. It does serve as a super lubricant becasue it has chlorine in it. Chrlorine will eat the crap out of your bearings after a while and is bad on seals and valve guides. I do not think their ads are staged as it really works in that respect. I have personally seen what adding chlorox will do to oil with the ball bearing test. It is amazing. They did pic the right engine for the test though.

I would never let prolong come within 50 feet of my FE though. Leaks are hard enough to control as it is. I like my bearings too.

Funny thing, I saw a 30 second clip of the Prolong infomercial on TV last night and it does resemble an FE. I'd never looked that closely before I saw this post. It is a large V8 engine with the rocker arm shaft assemblies and all.

What a waste of a good FE. :-X09

Was it a big block chrysler? they have shaft rockers and a skirted block. i'm gonna have to go looking tonight about 1 am...:)
