Engine runs great at higher RPM, but misses and just about quits at lower RPM

My friend has a 97' escort with a 2.0.. I runs great at higher RPM and misses and just about quits at lower rpm.. I was thinking it was a bad EGR, or a vaccum leak of some kind.. Does anyone agree with me, or do any of you have any Ideas of what it may/ could be?

Open up the air intake tubing to see if the throttle body is real dirty around the butterfly. It won't run right if it is. This is just one of the reasons why I prefer to run premium gas. If it is dirty, just use spray carb cleaner with the engine running.
