GMC/CHEVY/DODGE hubs
I am wondering what the other trucks manufactureres do for locking their front hubs. I know Dodge and Chevy just have a pull shifters on the floor or electronic push button for their respective 4X4 modes.
Ford Super Duty's seem to be the only model and manufacturer that has this manual hub mechanism. Those people with the vacuum assited auto hubs seem to have alot of problems. I have freinds with Rams and Chevys and I never hear of them replacing hubs. Maybe they just don't tell me. Just wondering why I only see manual hubs on the Big Fords. By the way yes I do have manual hubs on my Super Duty. thanks |
Anyone know who supplies Ford with the hubs for the Super Duty?

I have a 99 f350 v10...it has a switch on the dash, and also hubs outside...go figure...
So what I want to know is when do you get out and lock em in...this winter they worked great just swithching on the dash. I would imagine that doing some real off road stuff would be better to lock em in. |

The manual part of the hub is there in case you ever have a vacuum problem. You can manually override the auto system and engage the hubs. Twisting the knob doesn't really make them lock more securely.

Maybe I was not clear in my post.
I am wondering why no other truck manufacturer (well besides toyota) installs manual hubs at all. How do their 4x4 systems work?

The Answer!
Check out THIS PAGE for an explination on how the Dodge system works. Kinda similar to Fords system, without the manual hub backup.

Thanks Munkey!
That was a cool article. Now I get it. I woul dguess the Chevy is a vaiance on this method. I now also understand better why people prefer the manual hub option also.
thanks again |
Are we sure that the HD trucks use the center-disconnect? That article appears to be talking about the 1500 series trucks.
