flathead 6 cylinder
 

Can somebody help me! My father passed away and has an old engine in the shop. It is a flat head6 but thats all i know. Everyone wants to throw it out but me . My argument is that they dont make them anymore and can;t be replaced I need and answer ASAP!!!!! any help would be greatly appreciated

hey my old ford has the flat 6 too. Yeah it isn't the "in" flathead, the 8 cylinder and wasn't used after 1951 much except for tractors, and is the same basically as the dodge, study and jeep 226. I woudn't throiw it out but it isn't worth much, does it run? I can use runners.

got a flathead six in a 52 F6 out here, gonna go to scrap monday unless someone claims it

well the truck in question got scrapped like a day or two after i posted this


i tried to save it

didnt work out :-(

everyone is always in a hurry to scrap stuff and would rather have scrap money than anything else these days

Back on topic....

Flathead six is a very smooth running motor, that is simple and basic to both fix and drive. When set up right, they can get good milleage and have torque. (It's probably better if you don't mention the horsepower). LOL

These old motors can pretty much run on "anything flammable"

I rebuilt my 226 flathead 6 cylinder engine and it does run smooth. You can barely hear it when started. I was told at Nats this year that the 8's had more power, but the 6's would climp the hills better and faster. I put about 30 miles on mine so far and it runs great. I did not have the wrecker bed on yet so it did bounce around alot!

I wish I would have known, I would have drove to get it. I have 4 now. Let me know if you run accrossed any more!

Well a 6 has a longer stroke so thus more torque then a 239. Torque is what it is all about, but then I like my 239s, but wouldn't mind a 215 or 226 kickin around.

Good to hear Ksmith that someone else is as stupid as I to keep foolin around without valve covers. LOL

the torque is identicle (225 vs 239) to the V8 but the six peaks at 1200 rpm vs the V8 at 2000 rpm making it pull a little better out the hole. just my 2 cents. For the record I do love the way any flathead sounds be it an 8 or 6 cyl.

Hey ksmith, Like I said before are you just trying to corner the market on flatheads? :-) Again I am sorry that I didn't have the money to buy that 59A motor from you. Too bad at the time I didn't know you were hording the I6s though. I know a fellow who has an "H" (with a heavy duty 4spd attached so it has the good ring as far as I know) The guy generally seems to be really good when he prices things.

I just bought from him a light duty 3spd (with bad gears), front shock mounts from an F1, a decent battery tray, 3 stock16" wheels. I offered him $75 for all and he talked me down to $50 -- since the trans had bad gears (I pulled the trans in the rain so I didn't notice the hairline crack that runs from the main bearing to the top of the bell, so I can't really blame him for that).

That said though, he does have several 8BA and up V8s that I think he wants a little too much for -- $250 each.

Next time you plan a trip to MN let me know I'll hook you up with the guy -- he knows that there is very little demand for the Flatty 6.
