?? Looking at a new LSD

Anyone know how to tell how many spline teeth are in our rear end? Not sure how to go about it, and the rear tag doesnt specify 28 or 31....

I have stock 3.55 gears, no LSD.

Garret,

Wouldn't the ford dealer know? When I had Steeda install mine, they never asked me how many splines I have, they just knew. Maybe you should order yours from them?

Tom

I could, but Id be spending another 80 dollars. I heard the only way to tell is to actually remove the housing and such and count them.....There has to be an answer.

Nooooo, any Ford mechanic would know. We have the exact same rear as all the other Ford trucks. Anyone who's ever worked on a Ford rear would know off the top of their heads.

www.steeda.com

call and ask them, they'll know.

Auburn Locking Differentials

Tired of spinning your wheels instead of winning races? Stop the "One Wheel Peel" with Auburn's heavy duty locking differential. Auburn differentials use cone-type clutches instead of plates. This proven design means excellent performance on the track, and great drivability on the street. Auburn Lockers are available for 8.8" rear ends and 31 spline axles.

Note: For F-150 & Expeditions Only!

TOM aka super genius

horizonhuskies 01-13-2004 02:37 PM

LoL. I know, but Steeda doesnt offer the 28 spline, which is also in mustangs and f-150s. Unless I am wrong!?!? So confuzzled! I will give em a call and see though, just to make you happy tom!

I stand corrected...steeda says 31 spline, so 31 it is....I will now sit in the corner of shame.

Hmm,

Ok, i'm confused.

why do you want a 28 spline? My truck has a 31 spline in it.

Your saying that you don't know if you have either a 31 or 28??
Your saying that you can have either but you don't know which one??

Why would they make 2 different size ring/pinion's for the same model year truck for the same 3:55 rear? Ok, now I'm NOT super genius, now I'm mucho el stupido igneramus!!!!!

Tom

Busa01 01-13-2004 02:45 PM

Ah,

I guess you made that call while I was typing that last post and posted your correction before I finished mine.

So they said they are ALL 31 spline then???

horizonhuskies 01-13-2004 05:52 PM

Nope, they said they carry the 31 spline for f150s. And thats all.

So good enough for government work

V6 F-150's come stock with 8.8 rears? I'm jealous!

Busa01 01-14-2004 07:34 AM

Yeah, same as the Stang V8's. Why, what size is yours? I was under the impression that they were all the same. oh well.

What brand of locking diff do you have and how well does it perform? Are you satisfied with it, or do you wish you got something else?

Tom

V6Mustang 01-14-2004 11:06 AM

V6 Mustangs come stock with 7.5" rear ends with 3.27:1 gearing and an open differential. I installed 3:73's and an Eaton LSD. I haven't had any problems. Auburn's are nice also. The only problem is that since the Auburns are cone type clutches, they can't be rebuilt. I'm satisfied with the Eaton, only thing I wish I could redo is the gears...next time I'm going to at least 4.30's :D

Busa01 01-14-2004 11:13 AM

Ah but how false you are my friend.

My brother has the same Auburn I have and he burned his clutches out due to all the drag racing he does. He called Auburn and with no questions asked, they send him a new set of clutches. He had them installed last weekend and works perfect now.

Tom

V6Mustang 01-14-2004 11:17 AM

Well...I stand corrected :) I have always heard that they could not be rebuilt.
