Buying a Expedition.

Hey All
I am looking to buy a Expedition. But would like some real, feed back. IE mileage, reliablity, etc.
Thanks Dave :-X25

New...Used.....Which one?

For the money, you can't beat our Expy's. As long as you care for it, it will care for you. (Sounds corny eh?)

Willie
I am looking at ether a new or used. We all know each yr has it own type of pros and cons. And its not corny.

I would have to say then, from the experience with my '98 and what I have read, there really isn't a "bad" year for Expy's. The '99 is a redesign along with the '03. I like the front end of the '98 (I have one so I guess I am prejudiced). My one suggestion is to get the larger 5.4L motor if possible. I have beefed up my 4.6L to where I will beat stock 5.4L's but in the end, larger is better for these big SUV's.

I just got my 03 Expy in June, and I am totally satisfied with it. A few small problems nothing major so far. As far as the engine size that is totally up to you and what you are going to use your Expy for. I have the 4.6L and have no problems with it's stock performance. (That doesn't mean that I'm not going to add more HP with bolt-ons.:D )

I have a 99 EB with 88k miles and except for a recent differential leak, I have never been happier with an auto....period.

I've had my 2000 for almost 2 months.
My wife and I love it!
Went with the 4.6 for economy. It has enough power.

Thanks
The Aerostar I have is great and have had no problems. But I was looking to buy up. The Freestar, well they can keep that. The only option I have to the Aero was the Explorer or Exped.
My wife has the Ex, so for space, Expedition I go. They have a 2002 XLT for 30,000$ Cdn here. I am looking at.
Thanks again, Happy Holidays
Dave

I have a 2002 XLT 5.4lt, bought it last spring with 30K miles on it. I pay around $25K (US). So, I don't know the exchange rate but looks a little high, bargain the cost...

2002 is the last year w/ the previous design. I haven't had one problem w/ mine. I love it, very reliable vehicle and safe...

Go for it!

I've got a '99 XLT 4x4 with the 5.4 and I couldn't be happier! The fit and feel is great and it has been very dependable. It's got 99K on it and from reading other posts on here, I don't think I will have any problem getting another 100K out of it.

Good luck!:-X04

How is the mileage? I know it will be worse than my Aero 7 Kms100ks/Exp 10Km100ks. It does have the 5.4 Lt. I would have liked the 6.8 or a diesel. I saw 03 F250 diesel all done up propane injection, duel ex. Damn it was a good looking truck.

dakota_viking 12-31-2003 01:07 PM

The milage is really the only down-fall I've found. (Anywhere between 13 to 17mpg depending on how you drive it)

As far as I'm concerned, i'm willing to give up a little milage for the comfort and power. I moved up to the Expy from a 4 cylinder Ranger that got nearly 28mpg but was small and totally gutless.

I don't regret the move.:-X22

Just be sure and test drive it at highway speeds for a period of time. I would ask to take it home overnight, to spend some time driving it to make sure it is all you want, and does not have the issues with the shake/vibration that myself and others have experienced. It is a great vehicle overall, but just something to be aware of. If I had it to do again, I would have taken it overnight, then negotiated for a new set of tires other than the Continentals.

We bought a 2001 eb about 6 months ago. It has the 5.4 with 4x4. We sure do like it. It has all the bells and whistle. We do tow with it and it tow just fine for us. Really like all the room it has inside. Going from a ford escape to the expedition was a change. My wife drives it mainly. I think if something happened I think she would pick the expedition over me.

Well I must say that my 98 Expedition XLT is the first vehicle that I owned that I actually love. I have done alot of maintenance (fluids, brakes, tires, shocks, etc....) but no problems yet. I am turning 74,000 miles and the vehicle looks and runs like it's new. Only downfall is the mileage, which before you made a purchase you would have already considered. I average between 10 to 15 mpg depending on the driving. I would say my daily average is 11.5 mpg. I did notice one thing when shopping for my truck which was a long 3 month process of test drives and bargaining, that dealers are getting $2000 to $3000 more than all of the private sales that I saw out there. I paid $14,000 for mine with 67,000 mile on it last year and dealers were selling comparable ones in worse shape for over $17,000. Kids can trash the leather in these vehicles, so i shopped around till I found one in near perfect condition! Good Luck!!!!
