1987-96 5.0 vortech supercharger kit?
Have any of you folks installed one of the vortech supercharger kits on your truck? I wanted some opinions on whether you felt the performance increase justified the $3K price of the kit.
Horsepower costs $$$, Vortech claims a 75 hosepower and 74 ft-lbs. of torque increase with 5lbs boost. I would guess these figures are for installation on a otherwise stock engine. |
Don't have a vortech, but if I were getting a supercharger, I'd be getting a Kenne Bell. The roots type charger will give you much more at lower rpm's that a centrifugal type (vortech) would. I think the gains from the Kenne Bell may be more than what Vortech is advertising, but I don't know for sure.

I run a Vortech SQ and about 13lbs of boost on my 94 Lightning with a host of other modifications and no idle/cruise issues either. However, the primary purpose of your vehicle should be a factor when selecting a supercharger. If you plan on towing and maybe a few short "stoplight" races, then the KB is the way to go. But the 1/8 and 1/4 mile is where the Vortech is gonna shine.

^ that's true. If my truck were a lightning, I'd get a vortech for all out horsepower. I don't have a lightning, and use my truck for hauling stuff mainly, which would be better suited by a Kenne Bell. It all depends on the application and how you plan to drive the truck.
