Towing with the 4.2L V-6
 

Hey guys,

Anyone pull a car and trailer with the 4.2L V-6 and 5 spd tranny? How did it do?

mine pulled strong with my boys cadi in tow...i mean it wasnt like impressive 0-60 speed but it got out of the way. No real lag but no excessive amount of power...the only thing that i didnt like was the braking and the rear sway when you changed lanes at a higher speed.....oh yea count on stopping at EVERY gas station on the way cause it SUCKS some GAS:-X04

You're the first person to post a positive reply that actually did it. Everyone else that replied had V-8s and said no way. I mean, this thing has 202HP and 254 torque. I've got the class III hitch and am not expecting to win a race, but want to use it to pull my mustang to MCA events a couple times a year. It's about 4500 - 5000 lbs total trailer weight.

I’ve towed several cars on trailers with my 98 4.2L 5-speed without any problems. I tow my boat regularly and I think it weighs somewhere around 4000 pounds including the trailer. It’s probably taken a few miles off the life of my clutch, but I’m currently at 105,000 without any problems. Just remember you are doubling the weight of your truck so braking and handling are adversely affected.

some of you might remember whats trucks use too have back in the late 70's had a F350 dump body. full of gravel towing a bobcat. it swayed a little and 50 was top speed. you can tow moat anything you want if you use common sense. remember allow plenty of room too stop.

When I had my 2000 F150, I pulled a Mustang on a Tandem axle trailer from Austin TX to Jacksonville Florida. That truck had the 4.2L V6 and 5 speed transmission and 3.08 Gears. We still drove around 70 mph most of the way. The only problem we had was going over the real high bridges and uphill. Like on the Mississippi River bridge, when we were getting onto the bridge we were doing at least 65, at the top we were only doing about 30-35mph and was down to 2nd gear. Other than that, the truck pulled fine and I drove it for another 2 years with no problems. Plus I pulled my boat with it all the time too.

I got a 16ft low boy that I pull prett often with my 4.2, and like they say: Get ready for gas stations!!! Mine don't pass too many when i got the trailer loaded with the 4 wheelers and such, but it does pull pretty decent for 6banger.....

IM PULLING A 24 FOOT 5TH WHEEL. I INCREASED THE EXHAUST TO 3 INCH. PUT IN A CENTREFORCE CLUTCH AND A HYPERTECH ENGINE CHIP WHICH GIVES ME AN EXTRA 13 HORSES. THE REAL DIFFERANCE IS THE TORQUE. IT WENT UP BY 30LBS. AS LONG AS IM NOT GOING THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS A LOT IM QUITE HAPPY WITH MY 4.2 V6 1997 5SPD MANUAL
