Ford F150 (1990) XLT Lariat randomly turning off

I recently acquired a 1990 Ford F150 with only 30k miles on the dash. However, when I hold the key in the starting position the truck will start just fine with no rough idling or concerning symptoms. As soon as I release the key from the start position, the truck turns off. I would also like to note, that I do not believe it is the actuator or the gearing between the ignition cylinder in the steering column is to blame, as stated previously the truck only has 30k miles, so I found it very unlikely to be the issue. I am more likely to believe it is the Fuel Pump Regulator (FPR) or something of that nature, possibly a bad ignition starter switch. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated, I want to thank you for your time and any help provided!

So look at the ignition switch to see if that is the problem. Remove it from the column then use a screwdriver or suitable substitute to manually move the switch though the different positions.

You very likely have the infamous Ford F series 87 to 91 broken actuator issue. For a non-mechanic (which includes me) this is an intimidating repair but there is a fantastic video on youtube by Pierre Bellehumeur that will show you how to do it. I recommend that when you have everything apart you also install a new electrical ignition switch . This is located on top of the steering column just before it goes through the firewall. The Dorman brand is good. Also, got a Dorman actuator from NAPA and another one from Amazon and both are made in China. It's not nearly as difficult a job as it appears to be at first glance. I have a few tips if you decide to do it. Good luck!

There is a detailed write up in the “sticky” section for the ignition actuator repair. What is an “electronic ignition starter module?” The part on top of the column is the ignition switch. I would avoid Dorman products if possible. Unfortunately I think they are the only one making the ignition actuator.

Yes, my apologies, I stand corrected. It was the electrical ignition switch. I appreciate the correction. I was also mistaken about what brand I used. I got it from NAPA. I also got an actuator from NAPA but it was stamped CHINA so I ordered a Dorman on Amazon. It was the exact same thing, also made in China. They had blurred out the word CHINA in the picture. I'll look for the sticky, thanks for that too.
