blower or supercharger for my 91 351w 5.8L
 

CAN YOU GUYS TELL ME, BLOWER OR SUPERCHARGER, WHICH WILL GIVE THE BEST OVERALL PERFOMANCE AND CAN ANY OF THESE WORK ON MY 91 351W, ALSO IF ANYONE WITH A SIMILAR TRUCK AS MINE HAS ONE OF THESE, HOW DO YOU LIKE AND WHERE DID YOU GET IT?:-X05

Personnaly i wold go with a supercharger extremly hevy power and torq its good for offroading racing towing and many other uses. personally i would go with and 8-71 its very powerful and is still streetable. once installd in your truck you should get much more power and torq but thay are fairly costly and can cause your tranny and gearbox to go into meltdown if you dont pay attintion to them to. if you endup with a supercharger i recomend getting autometer indash gauges to keep your trucks heat and pressure in good numbers. hope this helps good luck

I'm sorry that this doesn't provide any constructive information, but I was under the impression that a blower and a supercharger were the same thing. Am I delusional?

I look at a blower as a top mounted unit like a 671 and a supercharger is the unit that installs on your motor like an alt. or PS pump would.

They are both Superchargers or Blowers....depends on what you'd like to call them. There are different types of Superchargers/blowers. One is a Roots or Twinscrew and the other is a Centrfigual or "sidewinder". Each type has there place, so the "right" supercharger would depend on your application and what you plan on doing with your vehicle.....details.

well i still love my old truck and someday i wana donate the 351w to my 53 ranch wagon ,so most of the mod's i do to the truck i wana carry over to the ranch wagon buildup and then drop an 91 460 efi into the truck. my truck is so clean i'd be an idiot to wana buy anything else when this one is still perfect for me. i just want more power any way i can and your guys answers are really helpful. i have just ordered afr heads and edlebroke cam kit going on today as i type this reply. so thanks guys!

Positive displacemant blowers (6-71s, Eatons, Whipples, etc.) make near constant boost at all RPMs. Centrifugals (Vortech, Paxton, Powerdyne) make little or no boost at low revs but add progressively more boost as RPM increases.

What this means is that for most truck applications, towing , hauling, rock crawling, the positive displacement is a better option. Your 351 will act more or less like a 514, and drink like one too. The centrifugals usually make more peak HP than the positive displacement blowers because they consume fewer HP in heat and drive losses; they are generally regarded as better for racing. They tend to be somewhat less thirsty in cruise mode, too. A centrifugal will give very little to no benefit in towing at highway speeds.

A turbo is more efficient than either because it uses only energy that would otherwise be lost to run it. It produces HP on demand regardless of RPM; push the stupid pedal and you get boost. Properly sized turbos have very little lag, oversized units which are designed purely for maximum boost have considerable lag.

It all depends on what you want to do with your truck.

Positive displacement S/C make full boost at about 2000 rpm and make constant boost within +- 1 or 2 psi all the to the red line.

under normal driveing (no boost) Positive displacement S/C don't hurt your hwy mileage, sometimes you gain mileage, but you might lose maybe 1 or 2 MPG city
this is true with twin screw type, but with a big roots type (i.e. 671 blower) may not be(most likely) this "nice" to your mileage because they are less efficient than twin screw type.

I have a powerdyne supercharger on my 91 F250 with 351 and e40d automatic. It works realy well. Have had it on for about 2 years now with no problems. I pull a 7000# camper with this set-up. You don't know it's there driving normaly in overdrive. When you punch it you can tell there is extra power. Pulling camper with overdrive off at 60 you have about 2600 rpm, come to a hill and get into the throttle you have 2-3# of boost instantly. Will make a max of 5psi of boost with the pulley it came with. You could go one size bigger on the pully and get 6 psi. Also it works with the stock speed density computor set up. I paid 1995.00 for it out of Summitt. Overall a very good budget supercharger set-up.

The besst thing that is most effciant is a turbo most people don't know that you can buy one for a gas. The best way is to have one made while you are building your engine so that it is built to your engine and it is most effective because to have one truly tuned to your engine you hve to lower your compresson ratio. As for the diesels after market add ons like for the 6.9 and the 7.3 they are a lower boost than the ones on the factory turbo 7.3 and PowerStrokes.
