98 F-150 4x4 gas mileage

I just bought an 98 F150 4x4 4.6L w/ 157,000. Its been on the highway twice both times very windy used almost 3/4 of a tank of gas and I went about 160 miles. Around town it get about 10 mpg. I know I'm not going to get great mpg but is this normal. What can I do to get better mpg.

Hi jrell and welcome to the forum :)

Any idea if your truck has been tuned up recently? That can make quite a difference.
Until you figure out the actual mpg a few times though you dont really have any numbers to compare to what other people are getting. There are lots of posts about gas mileage here if you search for them.

This is low, I was getting 11mpg with a bad vacuum hose and a bad MAF causing it to run ful rich. Got it repaired and back to 14mpg.

I recently had concerns about MPG, and pulled the two easiest plugs to check condition. The very front plug hole had gotten some moisture in it and built up some rust. So I blew out the hole, and cleaned the coil boot very well on both plugs. This last tank i went from 11.5 to 12.5 mpg. I'm hoping to get near 14. I had just recently taken a long trip (about 4 hrs of driving each way) and couldn't get near 300miles to the tank which really concerned me because it was all highway, eliminating the possiblitiy of my lead foot. So I am going to do all the plugs despite the 100k mile rec interval, I think it will make a difference.
