Laker Exhaust? Or other exhaust that sounds great?

I love the sound of my Flathead V8 but it's really muffled by the dang muffler! My dad told me to put in side "Laker" exhaust. I searched for "laker" in this forum but didn't find anything. Has anyone done anything like that on their F1? I would assume I'd bypass the the exhaust before the muffler and go out one side, the passenger side... probably above the running board and below the cab? or maybe under the running board? I'd like to be able to switch from loud exhaust back to the muffler as well, manually is fine, like a valve diverter or something like that? I did that with the engine coolant line going to the heater so that in the summer it doesn't flow through the heater and make it even hotter in the cab.

Anyway, any link to a previous thread or info on what others have done would be appreciated!

there are many manufacturers of exhaust cut outs that are electrically operated. You can open and close them at the touch of a switch. I chose Granetelli Motorsports cut outs for my 51 F-1.

You can spend all day looking at them on line - even Ameven.com.

Here are photos of what I purchased:

I like the sound of side pipes. Kind of in between what you described.

I like the look of those side pipes as well.

I guess it's just a matter of connecting them, with angled pieces that bolt together? Or is this a welding job. I do pretty ugly welds, but I guess that doesn't matter under the truck!

Thanks for the info and idea.

This is cool, but I've still got the 6 volt system, so not sure electrical would work for me? Maybe there's a way to get the correct voltage/current to this (voltage regulator or something), I would just need to do some research.

I prefer "smithy's mufflers"

The search term you are looking for is, "Exhaust Cut Out".

Now I've got the Beach Boys' "Little Duece Coupe" song in my head...."she purrs like a kitten, till the lake pipes roar."

while you consider lake pipes or side pipes consider your ride height...and watch the speed bumps, and valleys...

I installed Dynomax VT mufflers. They provide you with the option of how much sound you want to have.

My exhaust mufflers where custom ordered from Chambered Classic Exhaust, they are 1/2 glass packed - 1/2 chambered style mufflers and have a aggressive tone.

I agree that the Ford Flathead V-8 has a pleasant and most unique sound. But IMHO they sound best with the correct pipes and mufflers. I tried a variety of different ones and found the combination of 2 ½" mandrel bent 304 stainless steel pipe and Borla mufflers sounded best to me. Also used an H-style crossover. Mellow tone without being obnoxious.
