HELP: Awful noise coming from front axle.

The truck is a '99 F-350, 4x4, ext. cab, 105K miles. Yesterday a horrible noise started coming from the front right hub area. Whenever the wheel is turned a screeching metal on metal noise is heard. The noise is only heard when the wheel is turned. When you stop turning the wheel, the noise stops.

Thanks a lot,
DEERSNIPER

Same Problem Here!

My 99 F250 4x4 just started making the same rattling noise from the front right hub area. It does it even if I drive straight though! If I am going slow enough I can click in the 4 wheel drive and it will make it go away. But will come back usually when I hit a little bump. Please Help if anyone has had this problem before!!! ( I did get under the truck and turn the axles and driveshaft from transfer case and both make a rattle noise possibly the same one when I am driving, but unsure if it may be normal)

jack it up and grab the wheel top and bottom see if the bearings are toast.

If it is the bearings (i will check tommorow) will it hurt to drive it like that for a week or two? Thanks.

Maybe!!!!I wouldn't unless you checked it and know what it is. The axle can be trashed as well as other parts if its the bearing.

I have a 00 F250 super cab short box and if you turn to the left I would hear the noise or go over a bump I could alos hear it. replace the front shocks and that took care of it.

Love the supercharged V-10

vibrations!

Ok here is the deal I took a farther look under the truck and the front axle wobbles up and down more than the other side. Its the axle moving in the wheel hub (which it rides on a bearing I am assuming)! BUT, they only sell the hub and bearing together! Which at a local parts store is $138. I ordered the part and hope its not hard to replace! If any other comments please resond! Thank You

you need to jack it up and take it apart and see whats damaged without driving the truck any more. The bearing in question is $350-400 dollars and you might have a bad axle...keep driving if you have lots of moolah....

I think they got the wrong bearing ordered.....its for a different application......if not I need 2 at that price

Bossman7121 11-11-2003 06:11 PM

Only 2? I'll take an even dozen... <s>

cheap cheap

The hub bearing assembly is ordered through advance auto parts not the ford dealer that is why its cheaper. the ford dealer wanted 300 something for it.

We are talking from experience. Minimum price is $260.00 and thats hard to get. Double check what you ordered and you will find they ordered the wrong part..

damnnnnnnnnnn

You guys were right! I got the part today and wrong shiat! But now i am confused because they gave me one that didn't have 4 wheel ABS and I have ABS positively. So i ordered "supposedly the right hub bearing" and it cost $280. Now when it comes in is there any special tricks I need to know before I rip it apart? Thank Y'all

99f350sd 11-13-2003 05:15 PM

Like I said b4 pull it all apart and see whats damaged and order all the parts. Aren't you gonna be bummed when you take it apart to change the bearing and all kinda other stuff is bad..
Like seals, axle, ball joints.
Oh and get a shop manual.

Bigtruckdriva 11-22-2003 03:06 AM

interesting.....

Ok I had all the parts when I tore it apart and the bearings were fine!!! Although they were completly dry. So i packed some grease in there and put everything back together, and well the darn vibration and noise went away. I know it seems hard to believe because it is still boggling my mind but I can't see that a little grease could really have that much effect. Any input???

So you don't have a super duty you have the old style right?
Cause the SD has no place to grease the wheel bearing.
