87 F 250 4X4 Netural Saftey Switch??

Ok.. Just bought a 87 F250 4x4.. It will fire and run as long as the starter is cranking over.. as soon as you let off the igntion switch it dies..

I was told it was the Netural Saftey Switch.. anyone have any ideas..

Thanks in advance
Jenn

I had an 88 F-250 3/4 ton. I had problems with the neutral safety switch a couple of times while I owned the truck. It would act like it wasn't starting and wouldn't start and I would replace the neutral safety switch and it would fire over perfect. I would say this is your problem. I would replace it before I did my ignition switch or anything else concerned with the ignition. It is located under the driver side next to the transmission. Just in case you didn't know.

The only thing the "Neutral Safety Switch" does is allow you to crank the engine in PARK and NEUTRAL ONLY. It doesn't have anything to do with your engine cutting out or dying once you release the key when starting.

Try and crank it in any gear BUT park and Neutral. If it cranks in R, D,2,1 or any gear other than park and neutral THEN replace the switch.

The problem you have is a WORN IGNITION SWITCH! It's attached to the key tumbler by a rod, and sits on the top of the steering column. Replace it and your problem should go away.

We by passed it by cutting the wire and crossing them over. It now cranks over in any gear but wont stay running.

We will try the ignition switch.. the one that is on it was replaced not to long ago.. it could of had a bad or wrong to to begin with.
