Putting on new trim. Best way to remove 30 year olds gunk
 

I want to put in new trim and when I start pulling the old stuff off there is a lot of gunk/marks underneath. Is there a way to easily remove the old stuff for it to mount securely? Do I need to use an orbital or is there something I can spray on and wipe off.

Well you got build up from paint and glue. The paint build up is the most problematic. Going to be hard to get the paint to lay flat and not peel or crack.

This worked for me removing the plastic window shade adhesive on my truck when I got it. Pricey but you have your work cut out for you without something. GooGone is good but I don't think it would help much with this. . Read directions and put it in an electric drill. Sandy..... I don't think you have to worry about the large black stripe as long as it is flat without glue.

Is that black strip vinyl or the adhesive backing from the old stripe?

definitelt get one of the eraser wheels that sandy linked. They do a great job. Just be careful on how hot you get it. If the black piece is part of the adhesive backing I would spray it with PB Blaster. You will just have to be patient so it can it’s magic. Spray it and let it absorb in to the backing. I will probably take a week or so of spraying it everyday. Once it turns loose it should peel off easily. If the Black is a vinyl stripe, just forgo the PB Blaster and get to work with the wheel

Zoom in, there is very little adhesive to remove. The trucks been repainted and was a two tone before.. that's a lot of paint build up to contend with.

Yea the black is paint, but it’s weird, the bed doesn’t have that black stripe. This truck was painted 15+ years ago by MAACO. paint is holding up well for a farm truck. I will give that wheel a try. Should I wet it down while running it to keep the temps down? I’m mainly just going to try to even it out so I can lay a new strip of moulding.

Since it is paint you don't have to work with that as the trim will cover it. I had to change out one piece and that's how I did it. The 3M tape is on the bottom and top I believe, and not even in the middle IIRC. It's been a long time ago since I did it, so just look at the directions for proper use since they are important Good luck and post some pics.

Yea. The tape is on the bottom and top. Once it isn’t 95 degrees outside I will get to work on removing the old trim, using that wheel to clean the areas for the new 3M tape and get it all cleaned up and ready for the new trim.
